Re: dashboard lights for Nissan Navara D22 '03
I did quite a big write up on dashboard bulbs a while ago.
Since then I have been experimenting with various lamps and colours.
Who says I have too much time on my hands?
When I originally changed the bulbs there was plenty of evidence that the bulb holders had been getting very hot, so a short while ago I experimented with LED's.
IMHO I would get SMD type LED's (SMD=surface mounted diodes).
These are LED's where the light emitting diode just sits on the surface of the holder, without any perspex covering at all, this type then emit light over a full 180 degrees, and are perfect for dash illumination.
Some that have perspex lens' have quite narrow light angle, and will not work in a dashboard giving out just a narrow beam, lighting up a very small area, not what a dash needs.
Regarding colours. I tried red - no good at all, very little illumination, white worked quite well but then standard bulbs are white.
Then I put blue ones in, I think these are terrific, all the figures on the gauges were backlit and stood out straight away, even the clock and milometer showed up blue but to be honest were a little hard to read.
This experiment never cost a lot, I paid £1-29 for 10, x 3 for each colour of a Chinese chap on Ebay.
They are T5 by the way.
Last year I also copied Woz and changed the backlighting on my climate control to red.
It's a bit like driving a pimp mobile, but I like it.
When it gets darker I will take a photo and try (?) to post it.
Very first upgraded D22 - 9 years and 70K miles and still going strong!
