Rear Wheel Bearing

Having replaced the front bearings 4 weeks ago, same noise now getting worse at the back. So got 2 rear bearing sets & seals from Milner ( ordered 1pm yesterday arrived 10am today, very quick!)

I have searched the forum for a 'how to' but nothing found on a start to finish on the job. Anybody who's done it, got any tips on what to lookout for??

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

Have you also checked the propshaft UJs? On my truck they had worn and made it feel like the bearings had gone on the front end.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

When you take the halfshaft out and get the bearing off, check the width of the original bearing and compare it t the one from Milner. I had a set from milner and the new bearing was 2mm thinner, which caused side play, ended up turning up a couple of 1mm spacers to compensate.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

Getting the half shafts out isnt to bad but getting the new bearings on may be a job for a specilist wtih a press and plenty of bits of tubing etc
One thing i will say is make sure you secure the brake baffle/back plate before you take the half shat out other wise it will fall and brake the lines off

Cheers

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

Do i need a special puller to get the bearing cup/seal out of the axle?
How is the bearing adjusted & do i need new ABS rings?

Thanks so far!

You shouldnt need to toutch the oil seal unless its leaking or you damage it removing the shat.
I have never actally done one myself as mine was under waranty but i do have the old shaft, the ABS ring looks like it may be problamatic to remove/refit and may need heating,
with the bearings they need to be pulled of toward the inside end of the shaft although you could proberbly knock the old ones off and use a long tube/deep press to get the new ones on
sorry i cant be of more help

Cheers

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

Listening to the replies i got i decided it was not a DIY thing!

So i got a refund on the bits i bought & decided to go to BILLCAR as Dave seamed to know what he was talking about. I left home this morning at 4am & was on there ramps at 8am sharp for some open heart sugary.

By 8.35am it was off the ramps & we were on a test drive, drowning noise gone. Just over 30mins to get the old half shaft out, new shaft with seals & bearing pre-done back in. New breather in the axle as it had seized (which if pressure builds up, seals blow, oil in your brakes) & re-fill with axle oil.

And the price including 197.50+VAT

I take my hat off to BILLCAR as its a VERY slick operation. They know the probs with the D22/D40 inside out & built a business to deal with them, one hell of a lot cheaper than the stealer's. A lot of stealer's use BILLCAR to replace the bearings & seals on half shafts they say.

Its common for the nearside rear bearing to go as the axle design fevers the right side with oil!

So if you have a prob Dave's your man. TOP BLOKE

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

Now ain't that a good story, with a happy ending too!
Why can't Nissan provide that service, more to the point if Nissan built the bloody thing right to start with then ya wouldn't have to find billcar.
Thankfully for all of us, billcar does exist !!!!
Well done guys, yet another happy customer!
