Cheers, I will be starting the SMF conversion soon, other things have got in the way for the meantime but I will start it as soon as I can

Changing the timing chain from the standard to the more robust duplex chain, prevents snapping

As above, The simplex (or Single) lower timing chain is well how can I put it "not up to the Job".
There have been many examples of the lower chain stretching and if left then it simply snaps.
At some point if you own a D40 or R51 then you will have this issue.

This is a guide on how to do a Duplex lower chain conversion on these trucks using the Billcar conversion kit.
