Re: Nexus 7 Tablet as replacment stereo

A mount was made with custom made brackets to hold it in the dashboard, when I go through the pictures I should have some more behind the scene pics than what Jamie has but I'm not 100%. I can ask the technician if required but this particular tablet did fit rather well without extensive modification.

Oh and hi Jamie by the way

As a Sat-nav it is pretty amazing you can have offline and on-line versions of navigation for radio and entertainment it pretty much rules in my opinion because you can have local music stored and relatively un-interrupted DAB/online radio (subject to mobile network coverage).

Hopefully Connor can dig out some more photos from the build process for you.

Was thinking of using an ipad as well , how do you get the power to the speakers ie how to power them and to get the steering whell controls to work . oh oh what about the reverse cams

A few people have done the iPad one. From memory they use a bluetooth car amp for the power to the speakers. I think you have to give up on steering wheel controls and i guess the camera would also have to be some sort of bluetooth affair?

There's plenty of android based headunits out there which offer all the features mentioned plus steering wheel and reverse cameras.
Pretty much plug and play too.

Garage
As for speakers would the headphone jack wired to the low level input of an amp work?

depends i actually have this car now but the installs been tweeked since i got it, if you used the headphone jack then you are sending out an analogue signal using the usb its digital and can be processed much easier by your sound processing unit and distributed to your Amps properly ie subs, tweets etc, headphones is just noise

The only difference will be potentially marginally better sound by exporting digitally into the amp, providing the amps DAC is better than the one in the Tablet. In reality i doubt you would ever notice the difference.

I have just done very similar to this in my d22. I was lucky in that my 8" tablet fitted perfectly in the double din slot in my dash and is just trapped perfectly in place by the dash mounts and looks like it fits perfectly. I used a Bluetooth hot tub amplifier for the speakers, ran an ignition fed socket for charging behind the dash so the tablet turns on and off with my ignition. Maim reason I wanted an android tablet is so I can run my memory map software for laneing and it looks factory standard.

Very interested if you managae to find a way to get a reversing camera wired up, I can't figure out a way of getting the tablet to auto switch to the camera when in reverse.
