Re: A-pillar Gauge Pods

So, these will be fitted into my A-Pillar.

Can anyone tell me of a wire around here or in drivers foot well as I need to pick up a ignition 12v live?

I am rubbish at using a meter etc trying to find one lol

If someone could just say "yeah just splice into this red one" that would be awesome lol and a photo I can get the missus to tell me as I'm colour blind

Sir, STEP AWAY FROM THE WIRING.

Sorry couldn't help it,

Get access to the wiring at the back of the ignition switch, leave the ignition off for now.

Using your meter set to DC volts, connect the black, - negative lead to the retaining strap in the door jamb. Then using the red + probe, find the live wire by puncturing its insulation. The permanent live will show 12+volts.

Then turn on the ignition to the first position (so your radio comes on). Do the same with your meter, you will find the accessory live showing 12+volts

Then turn on the ignition to the fully on position (with ignition lights on). Do the same with your meter, you will find at least one wire that comes live with 12+volts. If you do splice into this wire, make sure you fit an extra inline fuse.

Good luck

Oh now it's getting complicated,

If it is just to power the gauges, just a small rating 10amp or less.

...providing that's suitable for your cable - always make sure your fuse is suitable for your cable. If that means it's not big enough for whatever you're powering - you need bigger cable.

Re: A-pillar Gauge Pods

So for the voltmeter for example, if it's wired to a 12+ volt ignition wire, is there a way to work out what amp wire I should use and size fuse?

Re: A-pillar Gauge Pods

You need to look at what current the thing you're hooking up is going to draw and work on that basis. You also need to check whether the wire you're tapping into can support it.

If you can trace the wire you're tapping into you'll be able to find out what it's fused at currently which will give you an upper limit at least.

D40
where the cig lighter socket is near the drivers left knee, there's a unused 12v plug for a second cig lighter socket. As fitted to the early d40s sure it's a ignition live
