Aftermarket Gauges

Afternoon chaps.

Having a bit of an annoying issue probably down to my technical ability. Basically I've modified my a pillar trim to hold some gauges. I've found I can tap off the back of the 12v plug for ignition only power which is fine. But I want to find a cable that only comes on when the dash lights are lit for the backlights.

I've been at it all morning with my voltmeter and the switches in the dash that I'm sure light up just seem dead on the voltmeter no matter what I try.

Obviously it's too light to really see if they light up or not but I'm sure they did hopefully I haven't somehow broken them. I tried the cables on the back of the switch for the light washers and the headlight position switch.

Am I doing something stupid?

Could you not find the fuse for the dash back lights and then use a piggy back fuse holder with fly lead to take power from there?

That's a good idea and would save me chopping cables up. I have the pfinder manual on cd so will check which fuse it is.

Thought you might like to see some photos of what I did in case someone wants to attempt something similar. This is not perfect, but at 76 to order in a a pillar mount from Australia I can live with the cups not being 100% straight and the general DIY look to it but hey serves its purpose.

the cups I bought are these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1525460031...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) and come with a stand that you attach the cup to, in my case I just fed it through and put a bolt through the back to hold it in place, I had to wrap the gauges in electrical tape to get them to fit snugly in the cup.

Unless I'm mistaken don't the switch's only illuminate when the lights or on? Why not find the lead from the switch that is live only when the lights are on .
Run it off a relay so as to not pull to much amps it need be

Yeah I was trying the cables from the switches with the ignition off and on and also lights off and on to see which cable became live when the lights were on but just got nothing.

Wondering if the truck is too smart as in it either knew it was daylight so disabled the lights or it thought my voltmeter was a short circuit or something and disabled the switch.

I'll have a look but I don't think I have an ashtray

I took a feed from my wing mirror switch on the dash to power the light on another switch I installed in the cab.
