Tailgate Dampers

Father Christmas was very generous and gave me a set of Sus.Tec tailgate and bonnet dampers. The bonney dampers were a doddle to fit thanks to the "How to" guide but the tailgate ones are a different story.

The Sus.Tec ones were chosen because they say they need no drilling but they have no fitting instructions and no obvious fitting position on the tailgate with out drilling. I have tried to fit using a Nutsert for the replacement bolt supplied in the kit but the position I have tried means the ram has fully closed before the tailgate has closed and then jams so that you can't close the tailgate.:frown2:

Has anybody fitted these and knows where to position the bolt on the tailgate so that the tailgate can be closed?

I fitted mine today. The position of the damper on the tailgate depends on the cylinder length, but I fitted mine 80mm from the bottom of the tail gate, just after the curve of the corner of the tailgate. Works fine, it is very slow to open now though!

Hi there
Sorry to ask but where did you get them from as I have only seen them from eBay in hong Kong or Malaysia. I think I need one as my 10year old got a massive shock the other day trying to open it. Bang and tears it could have been worse if little sister was underneath but thankfully not . Oh my gosh! It only took a second.

Mine were bought by my daughter for xmas and I don't know where she got them from. I have had a search on the internet but can't find the ones I saw before Xmas. I found an old ad on ebay for a supplier in Slough but they don't appear to have anything for sale at the moment, they were called rateme5.

There is this one in the UK http://xs4x4.parts/ez-down-tailgate-damper-fro-nissan-navara-2005-2105-2915-p.asp but their price is £107 and there is one in Thailand on ebay that want £55 or thereabouts.

I will speak to my daughter and see if she remembers where they came from.

Note my original question there are no fitting instructions with thye Sus.tec and you would need a Nutsert to fit the strut on the tailgate itself but where is the big problem. The £107 kit has a plate for fitting on the tailgate and may include instructions.

The Sus.tec doesn't have any instructions, template or fitting plate like the one in the photo. If I had seen these photos it would have saved me a spare hole in the tailgate but I have positioned the second one where the one in the photo mounts and fitted a nutsert to hold the fitting bolt supplied with the ram, Sus.tec don't provide one and suggest that no dilling is necessary, they obviously haven't seen a Navara. Still it's fitted and works well, initially a little slow to go down but once it has started you can give it a helping hand and it's not that stiff to push up again.

So, I installed mine yesterday. It works well. A bit slow to get started on the descent, but easy to open and close.

I bought a kit off ebay from Thailand. Arrived in just over a week.
It looks exactly like the one in the link:

http://m.ebay.com/itm/Tailgate-Damp...%3A2288a16f15a0a605c0fb8aacfffceef9%7Ciid%3A1

The damper is fine, but I have do two minor problems with the spring loaded hinge though, and these are as follows:

Once the oem hinge is removed, the new hinge does not cover the location fully. As it was unpainted below the hinge the area may be prone to rust and as such will jeed to be addressed.

Additionally, the olastic trim that runs along the top of tue rear bumper gets trapped below the hinge and metal. Not a big deal, but I will try at a later date to see if it can be moved.

Please excuse the pics as it got dark, and i had to use the flash.

Will try for better pics soon.

Ddp, how did you manage to fix the flexible cord? the original bolt is too short once i fitted the bracket for the strut.

I bought one of these too and the instructions are for a Ford Ranger, box says no drilling required but clearly does! no bracket supplied so how did you work out where to drill?

I bought one it was £26 but needed to drill it. No pattern or distructions so I drilled 1 hole in the wrong place doup and the second one right. ? Now I will make a bracket to use both holes and not bend the tail gate. Doup. Need to repaint the holes be for they rust....... no I didn't drill them in the chassis.

I just fixed it to the cord hanger on the truck and closed the back looking where the eye was and then marked the tailgate then opened it up and pulled the damper out and checked it lined up the same and drilled it where it hung when closed.
Job is a good un.
