Truck bed storage project

My new (to me) Navara came with a steel plate Mountain Top cover, perfect for carting heavy and bulky stuff, which I've already used for firewood and bales of straw.

I thought I'd like to put some kind of storage arrangement in the bed to stop stuff rolling around. Some great ideas and pictures on the forum so i decided to go with two compartments running along the sides, with the middle left clear for bulk items.

Couple of photos attached of the work in progress. The basic idea is that the back panel is attached to the c channel by two eye bolts passed through holes in the ply to spring nuts in the channel.

Those spring nuts are fierce hard to come by. I only have two I salvaged somewhere and even our local hardware, who are great for old and hard to get stuff, don't have them.

There'll be a couple of stops to hold the base plate in place once its in situ, so if my measurements are correct (and they almost certainly aren't) the fit should be good and secure, with no shifting or rattling.

Once its been painted I'll be adding some cleats and more eye bolts to secure loads, so fingers crossed for the fitting.

Got the storage frame installed and it fits perfectly, although I forgot to allow for the bas relief mouldings on the inside of the tailgate. I'd done it to fit flush with the metal lip at the end of the bed, but I can shut the gate fine and the ply absorbs the pressure fine.

I've filled it up with a load of unnecessary rubbish which will come out at the weekend, with just the essentials there and some crates or baskets for bits and pieces.

The best bit is that the inner edges are measured so I can slide in sheets of ply or MDF which sit on top nice and level. The ropes attached to eye bolts on the back plates then come over and under and can be tied off to the cleats in no time.

I do realise this is a bit like where the Ladybird book 'The Shed' describes the shed as somewhere a man can store the tins of paint that he uses to paint the shed, but what harm.

I was wondering if something like that was possible and was toying with the idea of taking the gas strut yokes off altogether. The way its set up now I'm happy enough as all the emergency stuff is near the back tucked in around and above the wheel wells and I'm satisfied with access to the remaining free areas.

Would be good thought to be able to open it up the whole way.

I'm working on another project at the moment and once its finished i'll be able to retrofit it to leave me with an easily installed and dismantled walled box to sit on top of the mountain top.
