Exclamation WARNING torque settings for Cylinder Head are incorrect in the Nissan Manual

Hello everyone,

I've been in the process of swapping out my Cylinder Head and head gasket on my 2008 D40 Aventura and have been caught out by a mistake in the official Nissan Navara D40 manual. On page EM-59 which covers the rebuild of the Cylinder Head item No. 4 which is the signal plate (reference disc for the camshaft sensor) and the officail Nissan manual states a torque setting of 93 foot pounds of torque. THIS IS INCORRECT! it should be 43.3 foot pounds of torque. I've checked this with Billcar and it seems that all the Nissan manuals have the incorrect convertion from Newton Meters for this item.
I'm posting this as a warning to others who may be doing the same work on their D40's as the brand new head I purchased from Billcar now has a sheared signal disc bolt jambed in the rear of the camshaft. I hope this helps someone else from making a costly mistake through no fault of their own as we all know we trust what we see when we read the instructions manuals as laid out by the experts who build the cars
When I get my new head head repaired and urwrap it ready to fit I'll be double checking all the torque convertions detailed in the manual so I don't get caught out again. I hope this helps others and saves them from the heartache and fustration I've expetienced in what should have been an involved but enjoyable repair!

Thank you to Keith for posting the accompanying photo's to show everyone what went wrong and where to find the mistake in the manual. Now I don't know if there are any other misprinted/mistakes in the manual but I'll be doing my best to check everything before I do the jobs in the future.

3 other figures are wrong down the right hand side!
Missing decimal points on the lb-ft numbers!

The plural of anecdotes is not data. Anecdotes however, are better than hearsay.... And keep your NOx and particulate emissions LOW - it's better than killing your kids.

2014 Nav V6 (quite nice) & Celtic Rambler (awesome).

Yep! its pretty rubbish matey and because of mistakes in the manual like this it's going to cost me more money than it should have to do the head, and it maybe wont be on the road till next week now. Th real cherry on top is I cant complain to Nissan as we are not supposed to have the manual!

Unhappy

Gutted for you navmantr4a.
I've been trying to get hold of a workshop manual for my D40 V6 for nearly a year now, thinking that it would help me understand the vehicle more and possibly save a little money. A story like this makes me wonder if I should carry on with my hunt. Not a great deal of incentive if the manufacturer can't even be bothered to get things right.
All the best. Hope it comes together for you in the end.

Hi Dave

Don't get me wrong mate the manuals are very good and there is a lot of useful information and some of the info within is hard to get anywhere else but in this instance it let me down. If I'd been working in metric all would have been fine and the truck would have been up and running tomorrow night so maybe I need to move with the times and stop working in old money as they say? I'll keep you all posted as to how it progresses and take it on the chin for the extra unplanned financial outlay and I'm sure she will fire up and run once I get it back together.

Thumbs up

Fair play Gavin. I suppose your story struck home because it's the sort of thing that has and could still happen to me. Any pointers you could give me re the workshop manual situation would be appreciated, once you've got the time. Have had feelers out at home and abroad, plus numerous web searches, but no luck yet.
Cheers
