I have an 03 navara D22 4wd with 62k miles. for a while now it has misfired from time to time but nothing worrying (one of those i'll get them to check it when it goes in for service problems). It has now developed into a major problem when accelerating. After consulting a Nissan dealer and having it plugged into their diagnostic machine, i was told there were no faults showing. They did conceed that there was a problem after test driving it. I am now told that the process of elimination via replacement parts is the only way forward can anyone help as this could end up costing an arm and a leg just to diagnose without even curing it.

Its a D22 2.5 DI. By misfire i mean that when accelerating it feels as if one of the cylinders is not firing at all, then intermitingly coming back on line. but this only happens under load and it seems quite happy to idle all day. Had this been a petrol i would have changed the plug leads and plugs by now feeling confident of curing the problem.

weres navar aspecialst when you need him ;)

it dpends a bit on the feel so its hard to tell over the net.

a few things.... EGR valve stuck open. block it off and see if it improves (also check butterfly is working).
leaking/sticking injector. you could try some injector cleaner.

the other thing is it may not be a misfire but banging caused by loose conrod/bearing. see the many posts about these motors blowing up.

Does it happen around 2000 revs ?

Your ideling along doing 40 you put your foot down and it missfires ?
any black smoke ?

I would say it is the EGR valve just had one go on mine sticking open, i think the valve seal had gone slighily , so when it wanted to close it leaked a little then opend again.

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I've justn had the pump removed and tested by friend of a friend who works for bosch diesel specialist. Although some wear, there does not seem to be any obvious problems with the pump so i'm having it refitted. The egr is next to be tested as this sounds like a common problem, although i will try the gearbox switch first as this sounds cheaper. I haven't noticed any black smoke and it does somtimes happen earlier than 2000 rvs. Thanks again.

im having the same issue on my navara.

only happens in 3rd and 4th gear.... every other gear is fine

at first it started 'missfiring', although i wouldnt really call it that. More like a spark plug or HT lead at fault in a petrol engine, apart from mind is diesel, kinda kangaroo petrol style, if that makes sense.

if you revved it, it was fine. now this has turned into constant loss of power in 3rd and 4th.

turbo is fine, but its like its not spinning in 3rd and 4th. I have had the switch in the gearbox changed and still this same issue, getting nissan to plug it into their computer but reading the above im not sure its gonna find a fault now. If i hear anything i will let you guys know.
