No 4WD or dash light help!

I’m really hoping someone can help me with the below.

I have an 08 d40 adventura and recently replaced the built in sat nav unit with a pioneer stereo.

Whilst doing this it reactivated a aftermarket immobiliser that a previous owner had fitted which I had no knowledge of. It went to a local mechanic who managed to bypass the immobiliser.

I got the truck back and fitted the stereo without issue and changed the neutral position switch on the gearbox as the cruise control was inconsistent.

Everything has been working great until I went to a farm and selected 4wd.

The display light does not show up on the dash and it remains in 2wd. There are no fault codes on the car and no warning lights.

I’ve also checked the switch and done a Ecu reset. Still no change.

I’m wondering if there’s a fuse that might be the culprit or whether the mechanic has caused this somehow.

Any help would be massively appreciated

Some preliminary troubleshooting:

Failure to engage PLUS failure to warn you that it has not engaged means the car has no idea you told it to shift to 4WD.

It could be as simple as a fault in the selector lever, especially if you have already worked on the neutral switch.

There is an actuator on the side of the transfer box, a bit of dismantling needed, but they have been known to stick.

Thanks chas gives me somewhere to start I’m just worried that the mechanic has bypassed my 4wd system as well as the crappy immobiliser 😬

Changing a head unit should never come anywhere near any wiring for the main harness or any alarm/immobiliser wiring. There could be (who knows why) wiring related to the immobiliser behind the head unit, but that should have remained intact.

You have two problems. The first is the immobiliser issue, that needs an Auto Electrician to remove it completely, or reinstate, that's your choice. Your head unit is unlikely to have effected this. (I am guessing you (and your mechanic!!) are handy and made a neat and clean job, I.E; only concerning yourself with ISO connectors and speakers, and the mechanic not ripping wires like a mad man, which he would need to do in order to effect the 4WD!)

Your next issue is the 4WD. Auto or manual box? You may want to pay some attention to the Transfer Control Unit, but as above, a few easier things to try first.

Na, don't do that yourself, best take it to the garage.

Thanks for the reply the truck is a manual.

I’ve been careful with replacing the head unit and wiring speakers but I can’t speak for the mechanic.

The immobiliser was someone’s aftermarket add on which never helps. It still beeps when the car is switched off but can’t kill the car like it did before.

However it does need to be tracked down and removed properly rather than a quick fix.
I’m going to call the mechanic and see if he recalls doing anything that may have caused this and get him to write down exactly what work he has done

The mechanic, I guarantee, will neither recall doing anything bad, nor will write anything down (that you might use against him).

I doubt he is at fault. You may well not know when the last time your 4WD worked ok. Could be a bad earth, loose wire, faulty selector switch, fuse etc. After that, it could be the solenoids... An ECU reset may not pan out but easy to try...

Actually, I seem to remember that there is a fuse for the 4x4, worth checking out.
