And sure enough just around the next curve was a cow upside down in the ditch, swollen and ready to burst in the heat. Hope it was a road train that hit it, as anything else would have come off worse.

And of course with all that roadkill you get the scavangers - officially wedge tailed eagles, but we nicknamed then Nullarbor Budgies upto 1.2m tall and wingspan of 2.3m. Apparently its best to slow down if they are on a carcass on the highway as their claws are so long that they can have difficulty taking off in time, and if you get one in the radiator it can do a lot of damage....

We did nothing but drive continuously at 130km/h each day between these photos, and camp about 1730 each night.

Acknowledged - i was just going off the sigs on that particular thread-except Eastrea, which the google tells me is in deepest darkest Cambridgeshire? And we know what their old Chief Constable was like for traffic prosecutions - turned the A14 into a disco there were so many speed camera strobe lights.

Yup, had plenty of those days - we had done Ayers Rock - when it was still called that - as a fly through on a previous trip, so came down from the north as far as Tennant Creek then turned left, and then up from Port Augusta as far as Coober Pedy and turned round....couldn't justify the fuel costs to repeat the visit for the sake of it.

A major reason not to go the previously-named Ayers Rock, is to get the bumper sticker that says "Can't be bothered with Ayers Rock" which is now a classic.

Also, you can get a sticker that says "I live near historic London, but could not get, in owing to traffic, so I went to boring Hatfield instead"

Ayers Rock is still called Ayers Rock. Much like half of Canada, it has a bilingual official name, and since custody was returned to the local indigenous group in the late 1980s, the name Uluru has been the one they prefer. But I have not previously found much awareness of that outside Australia - top marks to the forum for cultural awareness!

In the UK, everyone has a bumper sticker with "Observe Cultural Awareness Day" on it!
