Hi to all,
after searching this forum about limited slip differential I have a question:

I bought my Nav second hand from a dealer in Greece who has imported it from Belgium. I am very satisfied it is full extra, probably LE but it is so strange that is without a proper diff lock. It has ESP and I guess LSD. (I sent an e-mail to Nissan with my plate number, waiting for details about that).
I am very happy with how safe I feel when I drive in slippery conditions. I can stop the car going uphill on an icy road and I can start again without slipping at all. (It is auto which is something that helps).

Now the reason I am writing all these is because I am thinking to fit ARB Locker and I would like to hear opinions about that.

1. I don't want to lose that safety sense I have at the moment.
2. I know that ARB Locker is far better when you go offroad but on the other hand I am not looking for extreme situations (although it is always better to be prepared).
3. I do have winch and I go offroading about 15-25 times/year.

So what do you thing? Should I go for ARB or stay with LSD?

A locking rear diff is a tool for a purpose. If you don’t have a need for it, it’s a waste of your money.

For on road safety, electronic traction control is the most effective tool available. It’s also excellent off-road if appropriately calibrated for off-road use (Nissan are traditionally excellent at this). Off-road, ETC does not compromise steering or strain on the axles like a diff lock does.

Diff locks become useful when you encounter scenarios where one wheel leaves the ground. This is obviously more likely on the rigid rear axle and why most factory fitments only fit to the rear (I can count on one hand to be number of factory-fitted front diff locks in production today...)

The best combination is to have both, traction control and a diff lock. Unfortunately, traction control ceases to work on a locked axle, and with an ARB locker, this may cause the traction control to turn itself off completely on both axles when the diff is locked (the Nissan factory-fit diff lock keeps traction control running on the front axle, which is fantastic).

So in summary, if you have traction control and you’re not 100% sure you need a diff lock, you don’t need one. Invest that money in some good off-road tyres or nice long-travel springs and avoid losing grip to begin with.

PS - as the LSD usually takes different fluid to the open diff, someone who knows what they’re looking at should be able to tell by simple visual inspection. It probably left the factory with a sticker on it, but this is presumably long gone by now.

As above, if you find you are losing traction on your many off road trips, it is a useful upgrade.
Often said that difflocks will get you into trouble, a winch will get you out of it.

I think if you fit an ARB Locker you will complete lose LSD or traction control no matter if you engage it or not. If I am not wrong LSD is a part of the diff that you will replace and here comes my question: Does it worth to lose the safety that provides LSD especially on asphalt road in slippery conditions to get the benefit of a difflock when offroading?
If someone makes it clear to me that with ARB Lockers I still have LSD when Lockers are disengaged then without a doubt I will buy ARB.

If you spend your €1,000 on a difflock from ARB..

You will lose the LSD
You will still have TC.

Noting.. the LSD in the Navara is very soft, they didn't even fit it to the V6.

The TC doesn't do much either.

I can say from experience that my V6 (no LSD) with the TC off feels perfectly fine. It will wheel spin even on dry roads, but my right foot controls that.

Actually I don't know if my Nav has TC or LSD. I only have the option with a button for ESP and I have noticed when it spins an orange light showing a car that slips comes on.
With ESP on, driving on ice I can not make the car spin even if i will try hard.

Last winter we went ofroading, we were going uphill and I stooped because the car in front of me was slipping. It was so slippery that when I went out of the car I felt down. It was impossible to stand without holding the car. The ice was like cement and on the left side of the road was chaos, real scary. But from that point having 4x4 high and esp on the car started without spinning at all. This is what I don't want to lose and I don't know if this is only because of ESP or TC, or LSD.

And the cost just for rear ARB Locker with air compressor and installation fee here in Greece comes around 1.700 €.

That was the 4x4 which prevented wheelspin.

In 2WD it wouldn't have done it, even with ESP and TC.

By the way, the diff in the Navara rear is a 12 bolt 32 spline Dana M226.
Browse some US sites, you can also get Detroit Trutrac or electronically operating diff locks. They are a fair amount cheaper too.

Eaton have an electronic locker for the Navara, marketed under the brand “Off Road Equipment” or ORE.

If you have ESP, you have traction control.

If you fit an ARB diff lock, you will no longer have an LSD. (You will also need an air compressor permanently fitted, if this is not clear from ARB’s catalogue).

In Greece you can't find anything else but ARB Lockers. Importing something like this in Europe from USA or Australia you probably double price it and also who is going to install it properly and service it? At list the only choice (ARB) is reliable.

Yes, I would stick to what you can buy locally for this reason.

Today I spoke with a technician in Nissan, after they replied my e-mail and he told me that normally Navara has electrical locker with a button (something we knew anyway) and that the models that are full extra have torsen diff.

Does anybody knows anything about that?

I thought that it has Limited Slip Differential (LSD). Both Torsen and LSD are limited Diffs but Torsen is much better.

The person you spoke to must be misinformed as they are not Torsen. You can buy Torsen diffs for Dana axles, but then that goes back to the availablity and servicing in Greece.

I think that I will stay as I am and I will invest that money on something else. As we all know the list is long.

Wise move.

If I have got stuck it is normally that I have got the axles stuck on ridges or I have run out of ground clearance front or back.
Diff locks won't prevent that.
