It is possible, but as I said above there is a surprising amount of oil in the intake by design.
On the D40 there have been literally hundreds of people on here who have mistakenly replaced their turbos because there was oil in the intake by the way.
Totally agree, I was hoping that would be the case on this one also but not so. And the same symptoms of Gavwu with enough oil to cause smoke as it runs out of the hot pipe and down over the dpf.
Tests included removing breather and running to atmosphere whilst plugging the intake side of the hose, removing and cleaning all intake and boost pipes and running. So there is no chance of any oil from the pcv system to be in the turbos. Test run at idle then up to 1200rpm and oil leaking out the compressor side of the high pressure turbo.
Turbo drain pipe ok
Oil level ok and regular services
Blow by is negligible
Turbo is still spooling and there was no loss of power or smoke.
Unfortunately the seal has failed on hp turbo. Not common but possible.
Photo below is the oil pooling after 30 seconds of running at idle to 1200rpm
