Welcome to the forum.

Absolutely no problem to drive it like that.
Hi mate

I think I have the same issue with my d23
Arrived home and saw smoke comming from the bonnet, and I found a pool of oil.
Can some one please clarify if this is the same issue? Can I still drive it without causing damage to the motor until i can get a mechanic to replace the seals ?

Hard to tell from the pictures. I would be hesitant to keep driving with enough oil leaking to cause the oil to burn and smoke

Thanks mate.

You got a good point
Hoping it's just the seal or the hot pipe and not a leaky turbo.

What's the chances the turbo is warned and need a replacement.
Just trying to prepare my self for the worst scenario.

Turbos are pretty reliable nowadays, I wouldn't worry about that.

There is a fair amount of oil in the intake by design (deliberately leaving the piston ring gaps quite wide to reduce friction and hence emissions)

For a temporary fix, get a roll of oil resistant tape and wrap the offending joint.

I would suspect that you have a turbo seal passing oil with that much oil. I have got the same issue on one at the moment.

It is possible, but as I said above there is a surprising amount of oil in the intake by design.
On the D40 there have been literally hundreds of people on here who have mistakenly replaced their turbos because there was oil in the intake by the way.

Totally agree, I was hoping that would be the case on this one also but not so. And the same symptoms of Gavwu with enough oil to cause smoke as it runs out of the hot pipe and down over the dpf.
Tests included removing breather and running to atmosphere whilst plugging the intake side of the hose, removing and cleaning all intake and boost pipes and running. So there is no chance of any oil from the pcv system to be in the turbos. Test run at idle then up to 1200rpm and oil leaking out the compressor side of the high pressure turbo.
Turbo drain pipe ok
Oil level ok and regular services
Blow by is negligible
Turbo is still spooling and there was no loss of power or smoke.
Unfortunately the seal has failed on hp turbo. Not common but possible.

Ok, yes it does look like an oil seal failure. Is there any lateral play in the turbo spindle?
It's actually not such a major job to replace seals and bearings in a turbo, what takes the time is getting the turbo off!

I had a feeling I have a leaky turbo or a turbo that's going to fail on me.
I'm hoping I can still drive it to the mechanic tomorrow.
The mechanics is approximately 30km away. Let's hope it doesn't cause any damage.

Got a final verdict from the mechanics.
Just need a replacement seal, the turbo is fine.
Unfortunately the o ring can't be bought separately , need to buy a new hot pipe.
Ended ordering a genuine part, everyone else out of stock for 2 weeks.
Hope it doesn't leak after this or else I would be pretty disappointed.
Thanks for the advice boys .

Hi all
Me and a mate have just designed and manufactured a replacement seal for the hot pipe as his was leaking.
So far we have made one then it leaked under hard 4wd so we are on our second generation and so far so good. We have just made a batch of 10 pre production Seals to sell local to get some more real world testing.
All going to plan we should have this in the market before Xmas this year.
We are based in New Zealand.
We currently do not have a business just making these seal on the side.
If anyone is interested leave a comment or email me.

Cheers

This has happened to me 3x now. It’s currently at Nissan again I’m guessing to change the pipe AGAIN. My nav went into limp mode on the highway revs went to 4k and it struggled to get to 100km/h and lost all boost. Lifted the bonnets and there was oil all around that pipe and pooled down the bottom. Anyone had the same issue? Cheers

Hi everyone, I got a 19 plate NP300 hired for 3 years and the pipe had been replaced under warranty. i.e the newest generations are still affected by this issue.
I eventually bought a 16 plate that is pristine but same problem.
Can we manage sourcing the seals? I've seen posts but not where to get them from
Many thanks

Having investigated, my understanding is that either replacing the whole pipe or only the seal will unfortunately not last. Better spending a few more quid to get it definitely sorted.
See this Youtube video showing an upgrade with CRG hot pipe
What do you think?
