Hi all, just come across the forum through researching my next vehicle purchase.

I currently drive a vw t6 day van but need a 4x4 for some holidays I'm planning in Portugal and Spain, hopefully leading on to some more adventurous tours after that.

Im drawn to the Navara double cab as it can fit my family in comfortably, comes from a great pedigree and the Tekna Spec has all mod cons, which I'll appreciate as it's going to be my daily driver.

I've never had 4x4 before, let alone a pick up, but got well immersed into the VW van scene.

It is early days yet; I need to sell my van first but I'm thinking a 2018, Tekna, Manual with diff lock would be a good base vehicle.

If it comes with a canopy and sunroof, even better.

Will be lifting it, currently, I'm considering OME set up, but would really like a bit more than 30mm. Will also fit some 17" wheels with 285/70/17 AT tyres.

Anyway, hello, and looking forward to learning more about this vehicle.

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds a good plan. Here's an interesting thread to read through.

Hi, couple of points: I have a diff lock, not used it once in 6 years. I've read (here on this forum) that you're only going to need it if you regularly spend time with only 3 wheels on the ground, the rest of the time the Navara's traction control handles things quite adequately. In mud, ice, and snow I haven't found any reason to switch it on. Secondly, if you're going to be doing any towing then an auto box may be preferable - also read that on here somewhere, towing is heavy on clutches, I've not had any issue towing 2 tons of horse box with my auto.

That's advice worthy of consideration. It would certainly open up the market a fair bit. Diff Lock seems to be a rare option on the UK market.

I've also come across a couple of N Guard spec Navaras which seem to be similar to the Teknas with an extra bit of styling, so I've thrown them in to the mix too.

I've got a little 400kg trailer which I use every so often but don't see me using this if I've got a pick up, so not too concerned about towing. My main drive for wanting a manual is that I reckon I can get better MPG out of a manual than an automatic. My van has a 7 spd DSG, which is a lovely, smooth box, but I got better mpg with the previous 6 sp manual.

Actually the auto is very close to the manual on fuel. Above 50mph the torque converter locks up so the only penalty is urban driving.
Actually I use my trailers quite a lot. Easy to load being lower and less worried about scratching up the tub.

That's good to know, perhaps I'll take an auto for a test drive. That said, I'm not often stuck in traffic these days, and, I do miss a manual sometimes, especially when off the beaten track, which I plan to do a lot more of in the Navara!
