Hey,

just wondering if anyone might have an idea what's going on? It's a problem that's only happened about 3 times since owning the truck earlier this year. When I go to overtake someone the truck doesn't seem to shift down, then I'm stuck in that gear. Which I think must be 3rd or 4th. I have to find somewhere to stop and turn the engine off and on again and all is fine again. No lights come up on the dashboard so everything seems normal, but I can't shift back down. Not sure it's a limp mode as it's pretty useless once there's an uphill as it nearly grinds to a halt.

The truck is a 2008 model. If that helps?

Any pointers would be very much appreciated :)

Thanks

Rob

Welcome to the forum.

You can't do much DIY on an auto box apart from change the oil, I don't think that is your problem, but worth checking the fluid level (I think the 2008 still had a dipstick).

Noting that the electronics are inside the transmission, you can't do much the apart from checking that it is plugged in correctly and the earth is good.

You could go to an AT specialist, but that won't be cheap at all...

Hello, Rob, welcome.

What gear is the truck in when you almost grind to a halt uphill? It won't shift down at this point, or has no power?

Agree. Re-reading the original post, it does sound more like limp mode rather than a transmission issue.

In which case this is your first port of call

Thanks guys.

Yeah, has done it when I put my foot down to try to overtake. Probably best I get it in for a service as it's fine once I stop it and start again. There is power as if I shift it to N the engine revs. When I put it back in D it seems to still be stuck in the higher gear.

Cheers

Indeed, without load you will not notice a restricted engine which has been switched to limp parameters by the ECU.

I certainly think this is not gearbox related. The reason why it may appear to be still stuck in a high gear is possibly the result of the limp mode.

That sounds more promising than a gearbox issue. So is this likely a turbo boost solenoid change job?

Who knows. Remotely difficult to diagnose precisely. But I don't think so because it goes away after an ignition reset. If it was BCSV then I highly doubt this would change things.

This is due to the solenoid issue in the gearbox, basically you may need to replace the Low cost brake solenoid.. there are 7 solenoid in the system and most of to time above issue is causing by the first solenoid that is Low cost brake
