Hi guys, looks like the cold is killing the battery so time to buy a new one. Has anyone any suggestions as to which one to get and where from? And please dont say Halfrauds or Nissan!!

:cheers2:

your best bet is to buy one from a shop that has a turn over so you don't get a battery that has sat on a shelf for a long time I always look to get the biggest amp hour battery that will fit in the battery compartment..

You need an 096 battery. Very common, fits loads of vehicles.

Personally I would go for a premium brand - Bosch, Varta, Exide, Numax etc.
Standard is 600A cold cranking amps, there are some premium ones from the premium brands which will do 800A, at a price of course.

The advantage of buying a Bosch at Halfords is that if you have a problem they have loads of branches and are open every day.

I actually bought a decent battery for my van last year from Halfords, decent price too

Depending if you have to deal with the monekeys that work there!!! last year the Mrs Brothers car battery died, so i said id go to halfolds for him, get a battery and bring it to him, SO goes into halfords and have a quick look round, then i was jumpped on by said moneky! can i help you sir, yes i replyed, can i have a battery for a 2006 ford fiesta 1.6 please? sure sir, looks around and gives me this battery, it was huge!!! bigger than the navs battery! i said thats way to big, its bigger than what i have on my truck!!! that will fit fine sir! and then he said, that will start the car better cos it bigger
OK, so, off i goes knowing fine well this battery is far to big, gets to the mrs brothers, and gess what, Battery is about 4 times to big, wouldnt even fit in the area it was suposed to go in, let alone the battery try.

SO back off to Halford with old and new battery, slamed them down on the counter in front of the monkey, who just looked at me and went red in the face, so i just said, ill go and get the RIGHT battery myself shall I ??!?!? look on his face was priceless...

Moral to this story is......if your gunna use halfords, get the bits yourself with out any help from the staff!!!

Hi Guys,

I'm new on here, just bought a 06 Navara Aventura. Should be arriving tomorrow all being well!

I deal with batteries every day at work. My honest opinion is to opt for an Optima battery. They aren't the cheapest, but they are by far the best. Designed to give maximum CCA (Cold cranking amps) so gives best starting power. You can get red, yellow and (I think) blue top. If memory serves me correct red top are marine and yellow are road use. (they are a weird looking battery; resembles 5 pint beer cans strapped together from underneath!)

Once my car arrives I can tell you the best battery and prices if you like..

Red top are for starting, yellow for deepcycle such winches etc.

At 200 quid, yes great batteries, but a bit over specced for normal use, especially when a conventional branded battery is about a third of the price.

If high tech is your bag, some of the heavy users rate the Odyssey brand. For only 300 quid you will get a very advanced battery using absorbed mat technology capable of 2000A.

Blue top are deep cycle and engine start. mainly used on boats. I've had one for about fifteen years and it shows no sign of giving up. Leave it in the shed uncharged for a year and it will still start an old 130hp Volvo boat engine. ÂŁ200 now (but about ÂŁ80 when I bought mine) and in this case money well spent. Flattened it completely dead a couple of weeks ago, recharged and it's fine again.
I will soon need a new battery for the Nav' and was thinking about one of these. (850 CCA I believe).

Sorry, I never got back on this. Thanks very much for all the info, it'll be useful for the next time I need one. But, true to form, himself has just bought one without waiting to hear all the feedback - lets hope it isnt throwing good money at rubbish. He landed up with a Yuasa (?) whatever that is! Still, I think hes never bought a battery before so I'll allow him a mistake this time... btw, the one in the Nav is the original so its not done bad considering the work it does. :cheers2:

Last Optima I bought a couple of months ago was ÂŁ130- as I said, I get them trade, so if anyone wants one, let me know...

The Odyssey batteries I can get as well, again around ÂŁ130 to ÂŁ160

But for less than ÂŁ40 a Numax will do all you want and more, and give you a tank of juice as well against one of the Optima's!!!!!

Id get yourself a bosch silver or silver heavy duty 096. Theyre designed for use in cold countries and dont require maintenance or charging. Have used them for years and never had a problem. Should be able to get one from GSF or eurocarparts
