There are several ways to check - if its a manual box tuck your foot under the clutch and lift the pedal, then try the cruise - this will check the clutch switch.
Next, pull the gear lever toward you in 4th or above, then try to engage cruise - this will check th gear lever switch.
Its usually one or the other, although occasionally the steering wheel switch contacts get gummed up and can stop working, but try the other 2 first - its easier!!

its the gear box switch then dunno about adjusting it, you'll have to get up from underneath and have a look

thanks Rob, any clues as to where the switch is? just out of interest do you know the purpose of the switch any way why is it on the gearbox? thanks stephen

the switch is so the car ECU knows its in gear i suppose - if you knocked it out of gear cruise would be disabled. Do a search for Neutral position switch

hi been having look.think i can get to it buy taking the top off the centre console out. Another thing the 4WD lights up when in 2WD when you start up if i flick to 4WD then to 2WD it goes out. whats that about? thanks stephen
