Hi all, posting on here for a friend of mine, their D22 Kingcab engine went woopsie the other day, no exiting of conrods but big oil smell, total loss of power and wont start, initially assumed that its dropped a piston.

The truck has been at a mechanics workshop and he is saying it needs a new engine, i dont know what he has said is wrong with it, this is just the info i have been relayed.

So i spose the questions are; where is the best place for a replacement engine? Im thinking the best thing to do is just purchase a recon engine or similar.

and....

If the engine in the truck currently has dropped a piston, what damage would/could that cause internally. From a quick think about it, i thought new piston, new conrod, new bearings, and possibly a reground crank. As im typing this im feeling particularly bad becasue im a Motorsport Engineering Student at uni so i should know the answer in theory, but the uni teaches me naff all about cars and engines so im not too sure.

Cheers in advance
ADAM

Ps. I did try the search, but when searching "D22 New Engine" it wont search becasue it says the words are too common  ............So glad im running a D40 :clappy:

its a bit hard to comment on the engine without knowing specifically whats wrong with it...replacement engine, I would try Thrortons or maybe Billcar - places that are trustworthy and are recommended on here.

If the crankcase is intact then that's a positive. Best case is crank grind, new shells, possibly 1 new rod; worst case is new crank, rod, piston, head.

Hard to say until it's apart.

Replacement engines are circa 1500ÂŁ, plus allow a couple hundred for ARP fastners and ACL bearing mods.

Adam,
You and your mate need to know a lot more about the current condition of this engine.
Too many 'mechanics' won't/can't rebuild engines and go for the easy route of slipping in a new engine. I am obviously not saying this is the position in your mates case.
There are many documented cases where the block hass been saved and it was just the end cap bolt/s that have sheared off.
Find out more, see it partially stripped, get them to drop the sump, (best value) a couple of hours labour (with the right gear) may save him 6 grand or so for a new engine.
