Sorry for asking but I have read the posts on 4wd as this is my first 4wd vehicle still a bit confused. Don't use on tarmac, got that! But is it only to be used when going in a straight line? I have been using it recently due to the snow and as I have to turn round at the bottom of my street where snow is deep I have been leaving it on 4H is this okay or under know circumstances is it to be used when turning vehicle?

Thanks.
You are doing it right mate. Turning while in 4wd is fine as long as you are on something slippy, snow, mud, wet grass, ice etc. Just if the road is clear then tuning while in 4wd is bad!
The only thing you might find when trying to turn in 4wd while on the snow is that the truck tends to want to keep going straight because of the wheels trying to move at the same speed, so if you want to do a tight, slow turn you might find it turns easier if you flick it into 2wd and then back into 4wd after you are straightened up. With practice you will soon find out what works best for you. :thumbleft:
Pheww! Thanks for that glad I haven't done any damage was getting a bit worried.

Cheers.

I have a Nissan L200 2.5 Di-D Diamond Auto Double Cab. We've had serious snow and ice conditions and I have been able to use it for the last few days starting in 4L, 1-2, then shifting to 4H, 3, then into drive. Yesterday I can't get out of 4L. The switch won't turn and the jeep is juddering. Had to take it to work, but should I bring it to a garage or is there a way to get it out of 4L?

For starters your not ment to change from 4lo to 4hi/2wd while in motion. You are Ment to be stopped with the handbreak on and in neutral before you engage the 4hi or 2wd. You could have damaged something by doing that?

To try get it out of 4lo. Park the nav up. Pull up the handbreak. Put it in neutral. Push the switch in and turn to the left till it gets to 4hi. On the dash it should go from 4 black wheels and a 4lo below it to just 4 black wheels.

After this. To make sure it's fully disengaged. Flick it back to 2wd. The wheels will probably start blinking on the dash. Stick her into reverse and reverse back making sure the wheels have done one full rotation. You should now see two white an two black wheels. Your now back into rear wheel drive.

For future reference the only two drives you can engage while driving is 2wd and 4hi. You can only switch between them up to a maximum of 100kmh.

Hope this helps

Hi there, another newbie here I'm afraid. I understand when and when not to use 4wd thanks to this brilliant thread, but cold someone explain the difference between 4hi and 4lo and when to use which?

Thanks so much for all the info guys, very much appreciated!

Never use 4Lo on tarmac or such like surface when turning, you will stand a very high chance of breaking something

Can you use 4lo for going down steep hills covered in snow/ice as where i live its over a mile to the nearest road and we have to go down a very steep tarmac lane, ie use as a hill descent control like land rovers ?

Yes no problem, but dont try to turn on dry tarmac with in it on... turning on ice/snow/mud is not an issue

:cheers2: :smurfette: Thanks to all the Navara Magi on this forum. I got the Navara today in the nick of time before the weather really hit. I'm still afraid to park in my drive as it's up hill to get out. I've had so many bad experiences sliding back down it in my car I think I'm phobic - however, might this be a time to engage the 4lo? From parked, neutral position of course, then at the top, park and neutral again to switch back?

Also, I've noticed another option on the switch for "push". Any ideas?

Sorry for being such a big girl's blouse but just haven't a clue! :smurfette:

Thanks to you all! Without this forum I would have been lost!

Could be faulty switches on the transfer case, they can take in moisture, the later switches are updated, but maybe it just needs a bit of coaxing?

Start it up, select 2WD drive, reverse a little way, if it goes into 2WD, select 4WD Hi, it may just work

i seem to be having the same problem - can't seem to switch back into 2 wheel drive -any solutions -
ps rthere is also a shift lock little button to the left of the gear stick what does that do ?

Hi mervyn if you read through the 10 pages of this thread the answer is in here. Try reversing a bit then Forwards again. If that doesn't do it you need the switches in the transfer box replacing.

As for your shift lock my uk spec 56 plate doesn't have that. What country is yours model etc.
