I m getting a clunk in the drive drain when setting off. My Nav is a 2006 auto. Also whilst driving if I lift on and off of the throttle it makes I clunk. I ve had a quick look underneath and cant feel much play in the uj's, the prob does turn from left to right a bit. Any ideas?

With the vehicle in park chock the front wheels, then jack up one of the rear wheels. Release the handbrake rotate the raised wheel by hand to see if you can identify where the slack is, my money is still on the axle end propshaft UJ.

Good luck.

Just been under my dads new Nav and the play in the prop is the same as mine. So just squeezed  under mine and had a pull on the uj's . The rear one has no play but the front of the rear prop has movement in it. Only slight but it moves. So I m guessing I need to replace that and hope that is the cure.
I ll do a search on uj's, but any idea on the best ones to buy? Nissan want ÂŁ126 Inc for the part.

Just spoke to my local indy, ÂŁ35 plus vat for Uj and 45 plus vat to fit. Said the Uj would be a gkn from Millners. Wasn't sure on the Uj price though and needs to check. Would this be a good unit/price?

UJ's for the d40 can be bought for around ÂŁ25 each, you might also want to check halfshafts for play. Jack up the rear, grip the wheel each side, and push and pull in and out to see if there is excessive play?

2008 ST-X Duel cab Auto, mine does the same only now and then, took it to the dealers as I suspected UJ but when I got the report back it read: Noise in rear diff is backlash - Normal Operation - carried out tests - all ok no faults found. As I said it only does it off and on and you have to realy listen fo it. Still not shure if I should believe them or not. I have checked out Uj's and they have little or no play in them.

I remember a few years ago a few owners mentioned a clonk (auto only) sometimes when stopping, and they were told this was within tolerance.
Mine does it occasionaly, usually if i've been going quite fast and then stop fairly abruptly, both the D40's i've had have done this, so i guess it could be characteristic?

Never had the clonk pulling away though

I thought that was the fuel in the tank, navara1 mentioned it ages ago. Mine does it but only when there is about half a tank of fuel, my manual also did it with the same amount of fuel

Mine doesnt actually clunk pulling away the times it has done it is when driving normally take my foot off the throttle then immediately add throttle, havent taken any notice of amount of fuel in tank but will next time I hear it
