Used 4Lo over weekend on gravel... tried switching back to 2wd with no luck. 4WD light stays on on dash and 4Lo picture flashes and vehicle stuck in 4x4, although switch in 2wd position. Anybody having the same issue ? Nissan SA cannot fix the problem and after a week in shop cannot locate the problem. Transfer case has no damage, and all mechanical parts are in order (according to Nissan) Seems like some electrical problem.
ABS fault stop the 4WD engaging plus the truck has a electronic speed sensor that stops you engaging at high speeds ...if one of these faults happen whilst you are already in 4wd then I'm not 100% sure but I think you would find you cannot disengage 4WD...

the reason you can shift on the fly during normal driving is the front wheels are spinning at the same speed as the rears, if you try and select it when rears are spinning then it will crunch and grind as the gears are not spinning at same speed and won't mesh easily

I have recently had a D40 in that was stuck in 4wd , i looked on this forum and followed some points form other users , like checking A.B.S sensors , fitting upgrade solinoids to transfer box but had no luck . After exhausting all other options i decided to remove the motorised plastic housing on the back of the transfer box 2 x 12mm bolts and an 8 pin multi plug with 7 wires . With the box removed , all wheels off the ground get someone to start the vehicle and let it idle in 1st gear ,using a large flatblade screwdriver insert into the hole where the box was and move slot slowly in both directions , then get the person inside to move the switch through 2wd 4wdh and 4wdl . Return to neutral and switch off engine . By doing this it allows the motor to reset and the gearbox to reset. ( mine had been stuck in mud and had wound the gearbox up ) refit motor and recheck . Hopes this helps
