Damn that sounds bad. I guess similar to hitting a deer. They can write cars off.

Yeah unfortunately my only car else I probably would have bored the block out and used 2.5 Navara pistons and crank by now! :D

No. The oil pick up was designed correctly for the YD22 :).
By that you mean that the pickup is direct on the Pulsar whereas on the Navara being 4x4 the sump is of ***** design and the pickup is remote giving the oil a hell of a way to get drawn into the pump before pressure is gained?
Not only that fault, I'll bet your oil capacity is greater than the poxy 3.5 ltrs the Navara has?

Found it in the manual, 4.9 litres without filter change, 5.2 litres with filter change. My YD22 goes from empty to half full on the dipstick with only about 1 litre added.
Today is 20,000km oil change time.

Woz, yeah the pick up is direct into the sump, so no seals to leak so easily like on the D22's YD25 sump. I know the D40's sump has a better pickup though. Mine says 5.4l topup with oil filter change. Total capacity is 6.5l.

The ZD30DDT D22 spec takes 6.7L of oil.

Early ZD's weren't the most reliable ones but the later ones like mine are fine.

Nissan spent some big dollars fixing these issues even though they deny they exist.

I haven't heard of a single D22 ZD30 going pop. Mates of mates have had it happen to terrano/pathfinders locally and plenty of Aussies talking about patrols doing it on the net, but those patrols are very rare over here.

All the terrano/pathfinders that do it have variable vane turbos. I'm not saying that's the cause, more they have a different control system because of that turbo and that's where the problem lies.
Interestingly enough a ZD30 and a YD25DDTi used in the D22's are basically the same thing. Apart from the capacity difference they're both 4 cylinder cam chain diesels with VP44 pumps and wastegated turbos.

Probably the biggest killer of D22 spec ZD30's is there not intercooled.

The factory turbo has a tendency to spit the intake compressor wheel into the motor, when the turbo hasn't had time to cool down when there shut down.

An intercooler won't help that.
If a turbo has been shut down hot lots, it becomes a lubrication problem which eventually wears out the turbo bushings and shaft. Spitting the compressor wheel off is something entirely different.

No I mean if the compressor wheel lets go, a intercooler will catch the pieces.

Ill see if I can dig up a video. When the bearings fail, the compressor wheel is unbalanced and hits the housing at say 50,000rpm and then gets sucked into the engine.

If a intercooler was installed, it will catch all the pieces.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Cool video and me likey :clappy: :clappy:
Thanks for the up-date :thumbleft:

I've moved the intercooler down a couple of inches after a bit of tweaking yesterday. Didnt get a clear pic of it, but here's a few shots to show you how it stands now. Also installed the boost and EGT gauges.

Latest temporary placement of my gauges (until I can sort something with the audio/climate control). EGT where the ash tray was and boost gauge in vent. As I say this is temporary but it's neater than before gaffa tapped to the top of dash and steering column .

As you can see the Almera SXE doesnt leave much room for things like this because of all the sat nav/audio/climate control that's built into each other. I hope to rip all that out and stick in a headunit and manual controls.

Lights on.

Gave the interior a good clean too, something I've not done since I first bought her.
