Had an hour test drive of a VW AMAROK today ...what an awesome truck
When i first heard that VW was building a pickup i thought wow ,but when i heard it would only get a VW 2.0 TDI engine i was one of the grumpy ole fockers on here that poured scorn on the idea, as i thought with just a 2.0 it would be gutless in such a heavy 4x4,After the test drive i had today I couldn't of been more wrong
The one I drove today was the top spec hiline with Satnav and 163 bhp 400mn ..now my first thoughts were that this ent gonna be nowhere near as quick as a d40 which has had 170+ BHP since its release in 2005...like i said i couldn't have been more wrong, not only did it seem faster but its 0-60 felt much quicker to ,in fact i would go so far to say that its was even quicker off the mark than the Navara v6 dci i just outed, but then the poor auto box in the nav v6 lets it down 0-60.
Apparently with this 163 BHP 2.0 TDI engine you get Bi Turbos(Twin Turbos) that aid performance+ are really efficient and give this VW truck a 600+ mile range on a tank of fuel  .. that cant be bad can it
Another thing worth noting is when you first see one of these trucks in the flesh is how big they are off to a navara ...we went down there in my little bros 2009 d40 and side by side the AMAROK looks much bigger and beefier .
The build quality and paint Finnish has got to be the best i have eva seen on a truck...Nissan or Mitsubishi can only dream of paint like that .IMO The way the VW is put together and feels puts all the other manufacturers to shame .
I couldn't help but be very impressed with AMAROK and it takes a lot to impress my critical eye, Apparently there is waiting list on these trucks of 6 months but that will be longer for me as i will wait untill they have been out for a 12 months and pick me one up in the trade :D

Ummm you make a pretty convincing case. (I'll have to try one just to get my head around the 2.0l issue though!) Does the Bi-Turbo still have the growl and the slight rock that the 2.5 D40 has though?

So how much would Hi-Line spec cost and whats the servicing interval?

It might be worth a look, because I honestly don't see how Nissan are going to produce a better looking truck than the D40 next time round.

Glad they gave it a proper name too.. Ammo-rack sounds much better than Toerag.

Mate you know me i am seldom blown away but that VW truck is the real deal.
People say AMAROK is ugly but then do a search on this forum and in the early days on this site the same type of people tried to tell me the D4o was ugly and looked like a lego toy

Does sound very good, but those wheel arch extensions  . What colour was the one you tried, the one i looked at at the local open day thing a few months back was in a BAD brown, not good, did you get any pics ?? :thumbright:

This one is browny coloured, it's a bit of a blinger though:

The only thing i like the sound of so far is 600 miles to a tank :thumbright:

The one i saw a few weeks ago at a local dealer was pig ugly, but as always each to their own :salute:

The size difference is really noticeable more so in the flesh...the AMAROK dwarfs the Navara and makes it look like its in adifferent size class :)

In this 2nd pick you can see how dated the D40 looks now...but it has held its shape well considering its been with us since 2005 .

Yeah, that's the brown 'LT', hidden nicely by the sign writing - haven't noticed before either, the massive 'gap' in the rear wheel arch between wheel and body, very L200 style, me no like.

Garry, what was the ride like and the turning circle??

From what i have read i think they make 2 versions - a light duty and heavy duty model. The light duty has lightweight suspension and cant carry the 1000kg capacity to make it a commercial vehicle. The light duty one also has a lighter kerbweight which also improves the economy and performance etc.

Was reading a review just now, the top spec "Hiline" model was said to be a bit gutless, and overtaking had to be well planned!

One turbo takes care of low end, the other is for the higher revs, maybe they should have shoe horned a V6 into it, but then there'd be no 600 miles to the tank

Depends if the tank is a long range 150 litre one that would be achievable !

Its interesting to hear some much awaited feedback on the Amarok.

Personally i like the idea of a VW pick up, as i like VW's in general.

If their previous diesel engines are anything to go by, then the one in this truck should be spot on IMO.

The truck i drove was the top spec one ....the turning circle seemed no different than a d40 but then i didn't take that much notice...i will say one thing that you will notice when you drive one...the breaks are awesome and but a d40s to shame :)

Interesting  ,Gotta link to that review ? The one i drove mate was quick..the ride was smooth even tho it was on 19" and you couldn't here it go,unlike most d40s that are noisy in comparison...

The 0-60 is almost the same as a Nav due to the slightly lower kerbweight

I got offered the top spec version for ÂŁ30,800 but that included vat and seemingly some extras like a towbar etc.. Basically the dealer had an allocation of 12 but they didn't really know what the spec or models were that they were receiving and this was the one that nobody from the immediate waiting list wanted probably due to price.

Cheers, John

Sounds very simmilar to what i was told by our local dealer when i went to an open day thing a couple of months back. They where only getting 20 in the first year, 10 of which where already sold - BUT, they didn't know/have any details of what colour/spec etc the 20 would be, and they where going to 'match up' trucks to customers as best they could  Fook that, i wouldn't shell out 30k without knowing exactly what i was getting :pale:
