Is there any way I can increase the towing capacity of a D40 Navara? I am considering replacing my 2004 Rally raid with a D40 but what is putting me off is the 2,600kg towing capacity, my boat & trailer weigh more than this. My D22 can tow 3,000kgs. I have looked at a Ford Ranger Wildtrack because this will also tow 3,000kgs. Any ideas?

Ken.

????

the 4x4 D40's over here have a 3 ton tow rating.

a little odd as the D40 is heavier than the D22 but has less load capaisty :?:

its not just suspension it relates to the strength of the chassis, towbar mounts, steering, brakes, handling, rear axle weight, gross train weight, vehicle plates etc etc

I do not doubt that the car is capable of towing 3,000kgs but legally you must not exceed the manufacturers advised maximum. On commercial (HGV) vehicles the rating of the vehicle can be changed by changing rear springs/bump stops. I am sure I read on this forum some time ago that a member fitted an air suspension kit on his to increase the towing capacity.

It is interesting that the NZ D40 can tow 3,000kgs. Is it because it it a different specification, or is it the testing procedure is different?

Somebody PM'd me yesterday regarding My Navara’s Towing weight increase for pulling a fifth wheel Trailer however, I mistakenly deleted the PM before I had time to respond and now I'm not sure who posted it? Anyway, whoever sent me the PM here is the answer:

My truck now has a Gross Train Weight (GTW) of 6500Kg (Navara Double cab is normally 5810Kg) the work, and certifying authority was taken care of by the Fifth Wheel Company. To accomplish the increase in GTW the truck has been fitted with adjustable air suspension complete with compressor and accumulators etc. The trailer is around 3200Kg but aprox 500Kg of the total weight of the trailer is actualy carried by the truck when the trailer is connected. . It must be stressed that the fifth wheel trailer is towed from a fifth wheel hitch similar to that of an articulated lorry and is mounted in the Navarre’s load bay. The maximum of 2600 Kg can not be increased vie towing from a conventional towing "ball". Another stipulation to towing such a weight is the Trailer must be fitted with an active breaking system such as air brakes.

Anyway, hope this helps the member who popped the question.

The Navara curb weight is 3210 Kg (GTW - Max towing weight) (5810 - 2600) = 3210Kg so I presume the Pathfinder must be lighter? It is illegal to tow a trailer heavier than the vehicle towing it..

It is illegal to tow a trailer heavier than the vehicle towing it..
No, it is illegal to tow a trailer heavier than the car's towing limit (which may be defined by the manufacturer or deduct the cars gross train weight from the trailers maximum weight (gross trailer weight).
It is not illegal to tow a trailer heavier than the car, for a novice tower it just makes good sense to keep the maximum trailer weight to about 80% of the cars kerb weight, especially with some mamby pamby motor like a Mondeo!!

I stand corrected mowerman, I should have written "It is the combination of the car’s Maximum Permitted weight (MPW) sometimes called Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and the trailers Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). To get the towing limit simply deduct the MPW from the GTW. It is an offence to exceed the car’s towing limit"

Discovered that the Nav will tow a lot more by accident. Bit of a mix up at the quarry on their part and they dumped 4T+ of ready mix in the trailer. Luckily it's round the corner so the trailer pushed us home anyway.

It is a bit frustrating that you can't tow to a 3T limit. Off road on sites I do tow 3T generators at times and it would be nice to have that ability in the Nav. If I end up doing it more may have to resort to the Landy route as another vehicle which would be less than ideal

in contrast its not illegal here to tow more than manafactures specs. the tow rating don't mean jack.

Sorry to bump a really old thread.... but.... reading it I am confused.

I own a 55 plate D40 Navara Aventura.
I want to buy an Ifor Williams Box trailer (for work)

The BV105 model has the following spec.
BV105 6' H/R
Gross Weight: 2700kg
Unladen Weight: 735kg

(The smaller BV85 model has the same Gross Weight, but smaller unladen weight - due the fact its 2' shorter)

For what it's worth, I dont intend towing far, and the items I have in mind are bulky but not heavy. But I dont suppose that makes any difference.

OK to tow with my Nav or what?
I'm not interested "if" it will tow it, I know mechanically it will, am only interested in if its legal to tow it.
Have scowered the manual and cant find any guidance.
