Please can anyone tell me how quick the oil changes fom amber to jet black after an oil change on a d40 navara. Also should I be getting black smoke as i pull away on normal revs.Just picked my car up and was guaranteed an oil and filter change had been done.Looks pretty black on the dipstick.I then start looking for other faults etc and flipped the top off of the air filter housing and its as dirty as well cant say because i havent got anything to compare it with.needlees to say i am not a spring chicken and know a dirty filter when I see it. :?:

its not an exact science, but if your engine is healthy, and the filter is clean, it will turn blackish quite quickly, but it will not be thick or sludgy, the colour does not matter, its the viscosity and the properties the oil holds that matters
when i changed my oil last (filters ect) i checked it again after 2 weeks and 500 miles, and it was still amber (ish) 2 weeks later it was black. but dont worry about the colour,
sounds like she could do with a flush, and a bit of TLC.
small puff of black smoke is normal, as is under load, you might be slightly over fueling, or the EGR system might be blocked/sooted up a tad.
why not blank off the EGR, most folk do, and there is a marked improvement in smoothness and soot reduction.
its a bit like your appendix...you dont realy need it.

A service nowadays basically means a oil change and full check over, a navs service should include a fuel filter change at every service! A air filter is only due changing every other service!

Black smoke can be caused by a number of things. Blocked fuel filter, blocked air filter, dirty mass air flow sensor. If the fuel filter has been changed and the ecu and fuel pump hasn't reset then this can cause black smoke also, as the the trucks fuel pump and ecu will be working to the old filter which could have be partly blocked, now you have new free flowing fuel filter the truck might be pulling to much fuel into the engine now. Ecu and fuel pump reset can be found in the how to guides on here
