LED indicators

Has anyone already changed the indicator bulbs on the D40 for the LED ones yet. Tried searching but not a lot came up !!!

Am thinking of doing mine and dont know if I will need a new indicator relay to keep the flash rate the same......... That and I cant find the bloody relay anyway :lol: :lol:

Not sure about a relay with LEDs I normally use a resistor,check eBay for that... Loads on offer

You will probably need CANBUS LEDS so that it works with the ECU properly.

This gives the right sort of resistance that you would see from a normal bulb.

Carts...... resistors you mention..... what size ?..... how many (one for all or one for each bulb ?)... and where would they go ??

Eddmurphy ........ If I get the canbus type, will that mean I dont need anything else ??? and what is the link from the indicators to the ECU .......

If you get the canbus you won't need to do anything other than swap them!

I bought cheap LED ones, they work fine in Hazard mode, but use the indicators and they flashed like a bulb was broken. LEDs have very little resistance, however the canbus ones have an inline resistor, which sorts this out.

You will need 1 resi for each side this way you can use any of the LED bulbs, they are spliced in to loom and to earth, easiest point of connection I would say is at rear light clusters as you have both the indicator feed and an earth..

Of course the LEDs with the resitistor built in are plug and play..

Thanks for both suggestions, but will go with the canbus type, more expensive I assume, but way easier !

Out of interest though, still cant find the flasher relay ! Any ideas ????

Haha, not sure on that one then. Will need a D40 guru to help you there, i only have a D22.

Regarding the canbus bulbs they don't always work exactly right, they might stop error messages on the dash of some cars/trucks but won't always have a high enough resistance to stop the fast flashing. The resistor you need to fit would be 50w 6ohm load resistor these are the larger gold coloured ones. These do get hot so need to be away from plastic parts and secured and as previously posted one is needed for each bulb.

All you need is a load resistor for each side, they fit across both wires to the bulb. If you just put in a led bulb for the indicator then it will flash fast as if a bulb as blown as LEDs don't pull as much current as a normal bulb.
The load resistor will keep the current st the same rate as a normal bulb so will flash correctly.

YOU DON'T NEED CANBUS LEDs FOR THE NAV!

Thanks Andy :thumbright: Saved me from fitting them "in line" on either the live or earth feed as I thought they should have been fitted. Will get them soon as.

No idea, if like most vehicles it won't be in a fuse box it'll be tucked somewhere behind the dash.

Sorry cant help with flasher location. Can't get to truck at moment as screewed my ankle on Wednesday and on crutches.... Lol

Mate just been looking at the manual (PDF) and it seems that the flashing is done via the BCM...

The BCM also supplies input to combination meter terminals 11 and 12 through the CAN communication. This
input is processed by unified meter control unit in combination meter, which in turn supplies ground to the left
turn signal indicator lamp.
With power and input supplied, BCM controls flashing of LH turn signal lamps.

TURN SIGNAL OPERATION
LH Turn
When the turn signal switch is moved to the left position, BCM receives input signal requesting left turn signals
to flash.
BCM then supplies power
l through BCM terminal 47
l to front combination lamp LH terminal 1

and reads the same for right side of course...

I had remembered that you had mentioned the the resistors to be used in conjunction with normal LED's, I was going to go down the canbus route until I found out the difference in price........ then back the to much cheaper option LOL !!!!!!
