Does anyone if navaras can run on veg oil or bio diesel or Has anyone tried running their navara on veg oil or bio diesel.
Now the taxman allows you to use it.I know a lot of L 200 owners use it.

hi sawdust, I have thought of this myself but the dealer told me in no uncertain terms it'll invalidate your warranty if you do ... having said that I'd LOVE to run my D40 on the stuff. I saw not so long ago on Working Lunch there is a firm pumping out DIY processing machines for about a grand, ready to go, but of course you can do this for a fraction of the cost by making a siphoning / cleaning / strainer system yourself, if you have the space and supply of used veg oil ... I could chat all night about it. I think you can make 2000 or 4000 litres per annum now without having to pay any duty? Wouldnt like to say how the nav would get on with it, but I know someone who ran a Patrol for about 2 years on recycled veg oil/ biodiesel with no problems, but avoided it in really cold weather due to the waxing and solidifying issues ...

Hi Motty
yeah i have spoken to guys running l200s on veg oil but they stick mainly to 25%-50% veg to diesel mix and straight diesel in cold weather, with some diesel engines there seems to be an issue with injector pump seals when using ved oil and bio diesel, i dont know what the position is with navaras with the pumps but what you say about your mates patrol is interesting.

hi again, my mate was tipping it in neat, obviously processed, except in the winter, every 4/5 tank just fill up with DERV to flush it out a bit, and after the patrol got written off in a crash (no one hurt thankfully) he ran a fiat tempra 1.9 on it too, for about 15000 miles, stank like the local chippy but no problems - however the firm he was working for (and getting it off free-of-charge) distributing kent farm produce to london stopped doing it themselves because "one monday morning someone discovered it, or the spirit they were adding to dissolve the glycerin, has eventually attacked the rubber hoses of the storage tank / pump and poured about a tonne of it over the warehouse floor" ... obviously don't know the exact circumatances - could have been just a seal failure with nowt to do with the actual fuel itself ... so they started buying it in - and trading in the waste oil they were collecting via their customers (having been DIY'ing the fuel) to their now new fuel supplier. How old is the prospective Nav you're thinking of running it on?

i would avoid using straight veg on ANY rotary pump diesel motor. the **** in the veg oil comes out and fouls the pump.
the only pumps in the navaras that are any good for veg oil is the old TD series. even then build up in the pumps will kill it.
IMHO the VP pump on 2000+ D22 and common rail are to expencive to risk.
bio is better as the conversion process cleans some of the **** out.

pics from a kind person who ran part veg for 4 years on a hilux (ve pump same as whats on TD series motors).
edit: if you don't know what your looking at those parts should be nice and clean not covered in that brown gunk.

Put some red derv in it  Its only a ÂŁ1500 fine if you get caught :(
And no i dont use red,but a farmer who i once sold an L200 to has just got done for running on red and he got a ÂŁ1500 fine !
Maybe veg oil would be a safer bet  :)

ÂŁ1500 fine and possible crushing of the vehicle.

i ran my d22 for around 12 months on svo. come the really cold weather i mixed it 50/50. it also had 2 fuel line heaters.although i had a spare diesel pump i decided to go back to straight diesel as every now and then it started to play up.i think thats what killed my primer pump. stick to diesel as svo is as dear as diesel.never mind
ÂŁ1500 i know a chap who got 6 months he only drove the lorry. his gaffer filled it up. he was told its his responsibility to check his fuel.

never too old to learn, hehheh, so why is it illegal over there? emissions reasons?
Because its not taxed its only about ÂŁ3 a gallon !
But your not allowed to use it on the road !

had my van tank dipped just outside manchester.and a nice french policeman dipped it whilst in france.luckily neither had it in.i used to run my escort van with it ÂŁ12.50 for 3, 5 gallon containers.when we had the fuel shortage i filled a couple of extra containers for the mondeo . they were empty damp proofing liquid containers i had from a job.didnt clean em properly and killed the diesel pump so didnt save any money really.wont be pullin that stunt again

Back to the original question - I have a d40 and ran it for over 20,000 miles without a single problem on properly processed 100% Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO). The only thing I should have done (and the guy supplying me told me this) was to have changed the fuel filter. Which I didn't do so the filter did eventually get clogged resulting in a bit of starvation under load.
The only reason I have stopped is that I was given a slap on the wrists by the dealer and told that if I carried on using it I would invalidate the warranty.

So the answer is yes, in my experience they're fine (although if the outside temp is consistently below freezing I would add 15 - 25% regular diesel) but the dealers don't like it. And make sure the stuff you're making is good - or buy it from someone who does it properly.

dealers get tense about ANYTHING that varies from the norm - fuel, tyres, chip boxes...
Not sure any variation is worth it with a truck still under warranty unless the dealer OKs it first
