the trucks got 51k on the clock and its a 56 plate, at what mileage should the chain be replaced and whats involved? (is there anywhere respectable that supplys a full kit) and what kind off price am i looking at here?
The Navara D40 timing chains are supposed to last the life of the truck but, on some trucks the chain tensioner wears prematurely, this allows the chains to stretch, and so then they need sorting and pretty quick.spookyrooky said:its not rattling or loose, just curious as ive never had a chain driven vehicle and im unsure if it needs changed like a petrol belt driven motor around the 60k mark.
but thank you anyways![]()

Not all D40's suffer this issue, and Nissan will replace the tensioners and chains under recall, but only if they're wearing, and in some situations that's too late.
Nissan should really make it a general recall to be on the side of caution, but i doubt that they will
In theory a chain living in an oil bath should last as long as any engine component.eddmurphy said:In theory a chain should be done every 100k, however theres no necessity to do so.
True but chains also have a lot more wearable parts than say a camshaft for big end .....diydave said:In theory a chain living in an oil bath should last as long as any engine component.eddmurphy said:In theory a chain should be done every 100k, however theres no necessity to do so.

Chains stretch, pick up weak links, have tight spots, wear funny etc.
93,000 or 5yrs, and they will check your service schedule to make sure it's been done or I think you'll find they (Nissan ) wont honour the warranty.Biggi said:I'll try out this into prospective for you.
Nissan extended the warranty to 100,000miles or 5yrs. They will only look/replace the chain/gears/tensioner if found to be noisy (stretched chain)
The tensioner will take up normal wear, when the tensioner wears Due to the stretching of the chain, and the chain is no longer under tension, there is a risk of timing cover wear (oil leak) timing chain jumping giving incorrect timing, or chain failure! (engine kerplunk!)
If your engine is noisy then take it to the dealer and let them listen to it, if it's not noisy, leave it alone, or for peace of mind take it to billcar for the duplex conversion or buy a kit from them and do it yourself.
Basically Nissan fitted a bike chain to power a train, billcar fit a train chain ... So to speak.
Ideally a timing chain should last the lifetime of the vehicle, anybody mechanically minded or trained will advise changing it at 100,000 miles.
Nissan chains have been known to stretch beyond scope and fail at 60,000 miles according to billcar.
Hope that helps :cheers2:
That's the standard Nissan vehicle warranty but they extended it for the timing chain c0ckup!jkata said:Does the warranty extension cover the D40? I thought it was on the D22?
I've just checked the Nissan website and it says 60,000 miles or 3 years. :?
