sounds to me like it's gone completely out of timing, hence why the starter motor is struggling to turn it over.
:repost :really
2 people that know engines saying the same thing is better than one isn't it??

erm, lol....
I could be wrong :faint but as far as im aware your doesn't even have a DPF (diesel particulate filter)
So that would be magic (for them) if they could remove refit and part buy for that money lol :screwy

no dpf's on the manual euro 3 or euro 4's.

Have you removed the filter and checked all the intake for blockages / debris?
Check all turbo and intercooler pipes.
Check all vac pipes.
What mileage has it done?
Any fault codes on Ecu?
I'm not convinced the timing chain has slipped, but hard to tell via a forum!

Thats strange I completely sealed my EGR valve with a blanking plate (like lots of folks here) and it runs much better without it.

I think you need to find another garage this lot don't know the front of a Nav from the back.

As already mentioned. I'd go to a different garage. If they don't know that a pre-Euro5 manual Navara doesn't have DPF, they've got their hat on their hole.

I was thinking about EGR valve possibilities. As Landy-nut said, a lot of us have it blocked off permanently. Even if the valve was jammed open, at worst the engine would be running badly.

The scraping noise and slow turn-over makes me wonder about broken moving part, like a piston ring or something.

I see where ya coming from Tad, bad starting/smoke/noise...
Still thinking timing chain tensioner warn away though, rattle from chain on timing casing an possible timing tooth jump.
As bob builder said, so difficult to determine things over t'internet :cheers2:
Think ya need to find another garage Kay.

Got the Nav back today after insisting the garage do no more work on it, they have come to the conclusion that there is a problem with the turbo boost solenoid and as the Nav now actually runs, not near 100%, I got hold of a second hand one. Fitted the TBV and engine slowed, removed the 'out' pipe and engine picked up again, tried swapping the pipes just in case but made it worse, gonna have to check the voltages etc on the electrical feed as per Nav w/shop manual just in case elec prob.
Removed the pipe going to the Turbo on the boost valve sucked and noticed the movement on the turbo end, moved up and down ok with no sticking, will try with the engine running tomorrow.
Will have to contact the supplier tomorrow for a replacement and try on the Nav, starts first time now and revs ok but turbo won't spool up, checked the vanes on the air side and they are spinning and look complete and undamaged.
Looking at getting a blanking plate for the EGR Valve does blocking it actually help and won't do any damage and where exactly does it fit?

Checked the boost solenoid today and found that when I put the pipe on that leads to the turbo it made the boost rod jump up and down and wouldn't allow the turbo to spin up to speed.
A replacement boost solenoid will be here early next week and fingers crossed it will work, just great to have the engine revving but without the turbo spooling up still no power.

replaced the boost solenoid valve and no difference, stripped the EGR and found the 'repair' by the garage was terrible and the port was wide open all the time, fitting a blanking plate tomorrow hoping it will solve the problem as the Nav will now rev but no power without the turbo spooling up leaving soot inside all the guts of the EGR.

:whoopdeedo What a relief, found the fault was the EGR valve and after fitting a blanking plate the Nav is up and running like normal, will never darken the doors of the so-called 'garage' who attempted the repairs and failed miserably what the **** they think they actually do for a living I don't know, wasted ÂŁ350 on worthless work when a ÂŁ4.99 plate done the trick.

I would like to thank everyone here for their invaluable help, Kay. :clappy: :clappy: :clappy: :clappy:

Glad you've got if fixed ... :awesomework
I've been on this forum about six months now and as an ex mechanic I'm go smacked at the knowledge some of these guys an gals have...
Many a fault has been rectified by web diagnosis and a little try this an try that.. Far cheaper than a garage that has no idea!
Time to enjoy the Nav :cheers2:
