try to master the art of rev matching when changing down gears, it helps alot to get it into gear when the synchro's are worn or the gearbox oil is cold.

all modern gearboxes have synchro on first - since the days of mk2 minis,
more recently reverse gears have also had synchros
Agreed :thumbleft:
The Nav has synchros on all its gears inc reverse

erhm another question here, when trying to change to first when going into a standstill it
doesnt like to go in untill the car is fully stopped. normal?
This could be another symptom of having the wrong oil in your box.

However Biggi is spot on, there should be no situation that demands you to change down to first on the move.
With a really heavy load (digger) on a trailer it can sometimes be necessary to go from 2nd to first.
:really
Diggerman,

I concede that in extreme circumstances such as towing an extremely heavy load you may have to change down to first from second whilst moving I still insist that changing down the gears is an unnecessary and bad habit to get into.

Sorry mate, i really don't understand what you're talking about. maybe you've phrased it badly but I find it incredibly useful to change gear up and down whenever required, towing or not and from 1st to 2nd. it kinda helps if you don't want a stall. How can changing down be a bad habit, that's what they're for! :screwy
