hi guys, hows it going.

im new an will offcially introduce myself soon enough (with pics for once!)

ive got a d22 which doesnt like 2nd gear on cold start up, i know its common but
its more sticky than others ive driven. im nearly breaking my gear stick, i would just like to
know if anyone knew the most likely cause of this. i have used different oils etc.

before you say it also, i have used the search engine and have not found a sturdy enough answer to go from :(

any help would be tops! cheers guys.

You have put the correct gl4 gear oil in it? any grinding? the synchro may have had it due to chainging the oil to late. or have you used something like 90 140 gear oil?

drop the oil again flush it an add the correct oil again
not what you want to hear but try it
the gear box on the d22 is very good and not known to fail so give it another go

Sounds like the wrong viscosity oil was used, what type did you use?

if ive used the wrong viscosity oil, how much damage would it have done or will do to my gearbox?
The oil itself is unlikely to do any great damage although...... forcing the gears in coukld cause premature wear. Don't worry too much and change to the right stuff to see how you get on. :thumbright:

If GL5 rated oil has been used instead of GL4 then the baulk ring faces can be erroded and cause poor shifting regardless of the oils viscocity :(

Mines a tw@t also, goes in real easy when at snail pace (2mph) but try putting it in 1st or Reverse at a standstill & it fights you to the death!
Jay, your symptoms point to a clutch that is not releasing completely, it could be worth bleeding your clutch.

Hmm, really? I did actually put a thread up a year or so back asking but sorta didn't get much feedback. It has VERY slightly started to do it 2nd now, not often but it has occured.

Thanks for that my friend, a job for this afternoon me thinks :thumbright: :D

EDIT: just thought, sometimes my clutch has a little squeak when pushed in! Sorta like if it needed oiling, if that makes sense? I tend to ride it sometimes  (not often) just so that the gear lever wont fight me!

Jay, these D22 clutch hydraulics can be a bit of a barstool to bleed completely of air as they've such a small movement on the slave cylinder :(
If you're having trouble getting all the air out, 'wedge' the cluch pedal down to the floor overnight with a lump of timber or something similar and the air should be forced out by the morning :thumbleft:
This method is not in any text book you can read, so expect to be 'flamed' by the 'expert' later

The 2nd gear syncro on these boxes seem to be a little weak and mine is a bit tough to sellect when cold even with the correct grade and new oil installed :(
Chris Vince sourced a synthetic oil that cured this problem but I forgot to note it down
Chris might pop in later and tell us the manufacturer :fingersx

erhm another question here, when trying to change to first when going into a standstill it
doesnt like to go in untill the car is fully stopped. normal?
This could be another symptom of having the wrong oil in your box.

However Biggi is spot on, there should be no situation that demands you to change down to first on the move.

With a really heavy load (digger) on a trailer it can sometimes be necessary to go from 2nd to first.
:really

yeh, the clutch releases fine. it doesnt really bother me. was just wondering
if it was normal or if im doing much damage trying to put it in first or taking off in
second at a very slow speed.

thanks for the responses everyone! wasnt expecting this, great forum! :foshizzle

I go into 1st 75% of the time whilst at crawl at lights, it hasnt done it any harm :thumbright:

try to master the art of rev matching when changing down gears, it helps alot to get it into gear when the synchro's are worn or the gearbox oil is cold.

all modern gearboxes have synchro on first - since the days of mk2 minis,
more recently reverse gears have also had synchros
Agreed :thumbleft:
The Nav has synchros on all its gears inc reverse
