hey guys, so im thinkin about fitting a winch behind the front bumper in my D40, but im puzzled because i have no idea what a good brand is, i dont want to purchase one then after a while a gear breaks and its done ... and secondly, whats the bigest size winch that i can fit behind my bumper ? and last .... whats the difference between a normal winch and an ATV winch??? thanks guys for the advice :)

I believe you should be able to fit a 9000lb winch behind the standard bumper on a specially fabricated plate.

An ATV is a quad or Mule, a lot lighter than a Navara. Warn are considered to be the one of the origional and best in winches. Don't forget apart from buying the winch and mounting plate you have to consider the type of wire/rope you use as well as paying for the extra equipment you will need to go with the winch. ( Smach blocks, shackles, Ground anchors and strops)

Our Australian cousins tend to use winches on their Navaras more often than us in the UK, have a look at http://www.navara.asia/forum.php

ok so .... im getting this for my van ....
http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive ... 68144.html

is that any good ? and the warn winches are like 7k TTD (1k USD)
and this badland winch is about 200 US ... so im thinkin about this cause im not gonna do any major pulling, only incase i get stuck or incase my dad gets stuck,

any comments ?

For a navara you wil need a 9,000lb. The 5,000 in the link is a bt weak but will still get you out of trouble.
An atv winch is 1500lb to 2500lb so won't be much use.
Cheaper winches tend to be well made but not waterproof, fine for the odd self recovery but not great for regular use.

Correct that Warn are pricey, an 8274 is ÂŁ1500, after-market upgrades will add another ÂŁ4,000.

yea, u say 9000lb, you double up on the weight why ?

thing is, i dont want to put too much of a big winch, then again i know i wont use the whole 9000 lb lol ...
im not a big off roader, i just do a little camping etc, and that winch is gonna be used to pull myself out of small areas and pull my dad out from small areas, maybe clear one or 2 objects from the road lol. nothing more, |
i dont know the prices of the warn winches off hand, but in trinidad thats the prices, 6000 TTD to 12000TTD

so can i go ahead with my purchase ? or should i not do it ?
oh and it says ATV winch, so u said 1500lb - 2500lb, the one in the link is 5000lb lol ... so im jsut makin sure .. lol ...
thing is i wanna know if it makes sence putting this winch, and im also looking at the price as well ...

Dead right that you double the vehicle weight for winch capacity. Pretty much because that is the capacity needed to recover yourself when stuck.

I know you are a bit limited for choice in the carribean, do amazon.com deliver? They do a 8,500lb Superwinch for $299 which would be a much better choice. This winch is well liked, I had one for several years.

For the sort of use you are describing I would consider a manual Tirfor style winch. They are not much cheaper than a power winch but you would have much more flexibility as you can leave it at home when doing your day to day driving but take it with you when you think you will need it or move it from one vehicle to another. You may be able to source on locally and save some charges. They generally quote the lifting capacity and the pulling capacity it about 1.5 times more.

Just a thought.

yep. trifor ex military ones available. big bit of kit. never used one but i hear it can be hard work. alot more versatile and likely be more useful than a front mounted winch - which by the way will need extra battery & split charging system - probably fail when you come to use it or youll be stuck in such a position itll be hard to use. also if rolled onto side or in deep water you wont be able to run engine. trifor wins again.

other options include hydraulic winches running off power steering pump - more reliable, but still require the engine to be running

Had a 12500lb winch on my old shogun and bogged it to the axels in a bog, It took the winches maximum power to get it out, just before the shogun started to move was the hardest point as it was pulling against the suction, If i had a smaller winch it would have broke no doubt.

Use the winch with a snatch block and increase your pulling power....

but the question, is and still remains lol ...... its an ATV winch, would it burn out? i noticed the difference between winched are motor sizes and type, permanent magnet and series wound ... atv/truck winches, see the thing is i've seen winches, and the atv would fit snug behind the bumper, and the truch winch, well ... we gonna have to change the front bumper ....

When a winch reaches it's limit it will stall, so no it will not burn out unless you keep your finger on the switch when it stalls.
