Just looking at the parkers guide to the pathfinder and seen this.....

Have you had any problems with the car?
I do now regret buying it and would SERIOUSLY warn others from buying one of these due to a desgn fault that Nissan will not rectify. Basically the pipes that run to the rear heater are badly positioned and corrode through allowing coolant to drain out. To replace the pipes it is necessary to remove the body from the chassis which I find totally ridiculous! Price to repair ÂŁ1,750 plus!!!!!!! My T-Spec has done less than 50,000 miles and to face a bill like that is ludicrous. The pipes run from the front bulkhead right to the rear of the car in one piece so it is not possible to replace just the rotten section. To check it on your car take off the rear offside wheel and you will see the two aluminium pipes tucked up under the suspension mounting bracket.

You cap them from the front?.....is there a guide to doing this?

There was a thread I posted ages and ages ago about this problem but dammed if I can find it :(
Better to prevent the pipes corroding in the first place with a sealer/protector but if they fail, where the pipes fail you cut them off and cap/solder them up, then get the system re-gassed and away you go :thumbright:

Still a major **** up by Nissan once again though, my 97 shogun had a rear heater matrix which worked perfectly, infact my 89 pajero had one too and is working till this day not a leak in sight.

Hmmm i wonder about that one they have the Disco rated higher with cheaper repair costs REALLY!!!!!!

When I looked at the Disco I nearly passed out at some of the things that can/have gone wrong.

Go look on Honest John at the Disco 3

I'm a bit sceptical about these kind of reviews.

People that pay a lot for a 'quality' vehicle tend to expect more and are more likely to complain. On the other hand people that buy 'budget vehicles put up with more and are likely to complain less.

A few years ago the budget vehicles of choice were Lads and Moskovic, the owners would tell you they were the most reliable and cheap to run on the road despite their horrendous fuel consumption and the **** falling out of them with rust within a couple of years.

I have 2 friends that work for the AA and RAC, they both say that the amount of discos and range rover they are called out to are unreal and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole....the AA guy has a nissan X-trail. :)

i thought it an interesting set of info. being that 50% of reported issues were engine related which was alot higher than other vehicles also of interest was the average repair cost - again much more than most others. i always thought the engine was one of the stronger points, but maybe my assumption was wildly over rated. Maybe the high repair costs is down to dealers replacing un neccessary parts such as injector pumps etc when only suction control valve needs doing etc etc.

ive passed many a disco & RR on the haRD shoulder and wouldnt go into the desert in one.. that said im not overly confident about taking the pathy there either.

Im sure a few basic upgrades would eliminate many of the problems & wish nissan would address them and make a truly trustworthy vehicle. on my list would be:

clutch upgrade
timing chain upgrade
redesign brake system/front calipers.
seriuosly re design door lock mechanism
research into the suction valve failure & other common engine probs.

the other thing i was curious about is how many problems could be related to the 'black boxes' tuning chips etc folk run. eeking out every ounce power. stressing components & programming. i know with the VAG retuners they run boost pressures close to the limit for the turbos. which coincidently run close to the limit standard anway. i for 1 would go for 10% less power for vastly improved reliability. as it is no chip tuner i know will touch the nissan Y engine - probably because many of the components run close to max ability and prone to fail combined with awkward programming i expect make an unatttractive package.
dunno im rambling on abit.

anyway i cant say ive seen many d40s or pathy on the hard shoulder.

Nice one spirit....will give that a read later....

Now this list looks ugly.....

1/ .... clutch upgrade
2/ .... timing chain upgrade
3/ .... redesign brake system/front calipers.
4/ .... seriously re design door lock mechanism
5/ .... research into the suction valve failure & other common engine probs.

1/ .... is this from dual mass to solid?

2/ .... wasnt aware of the timing chain?.....is there an upgrade available?

3/ .... brakes, is this why mine are ***** lol,,,,and make sort of a fade noise all the time?....grooved discs sort this out or not?

4/ .... not sure about this one.....my drivers door doesn't lock?

5/ .... Suction valve.....Again never heard of this?

Had a list when i got my bmw 5 series....swirl flap removal.....water thermostats changed plus coolant (most common issue which stopped car getting up to temp for a regeneration and subsequently clogged DPF and then killed turbos)..... DPF removal and remap, it seems that theres faults with a few manufacturers even BMW.....the swirl flap was the biggest issue as bmw revised this issue by making the metal bars thicker on newer models so they wouldnt corrode and drop into the engine and Destroy the motor (there was a few on the forums that this has happened too) but left older models to take the chance with no recall?

At least if the issues are common, it is easy to get them sorted.
I change the engine oil in between the recommended services to help avoid chain wear, as it's a known weakness. Many vehicles reach high mileage with no problems anyway.

I was looking at a 4.4 V8 XC90, turns out they have a design flaw (external balancer shaft bearing sealed for life, can wear).

Many cars have their issues...
