Following on from some older threads regarding when to use 4wd in the Nav,I got to wondering why the Path has the auto setting too?

Is the Nav set up a little more hardcore when the going gets really tough?

Although not as much is written about the Path auto setting I'm assuming it's pretty much as the dial suggests, making for a versatile set up.

So why not on the Nav?

I used the Auto this morning in the snow and ice, went onto our local deserted "ice rink" (Its a coach park), to "bust ma moves", In 4wd auto, found the Pathfinder very impressive when cornering with power on to try power slide, the ESP works amazing really, then switched it off to have some fun, I found the Pathfinder very easy to correct a skid, better than my previous 4x4's, I usually take my grown up kids out in their cars to practice on the skid pan to practice manouvres..... and have some fun.

School run eh, bet more Nav's do it a lot more than the Pathy.
Everyone knows the nav's are just a VAT back job, if it was for trade, know one would get one. :really lol

Pretty sure the the transmission is the same, th AUTO is just electronics. Doesn't answer why they aren't the same though..guessing with the Pathy they looked at the competition and thought they should offer permanent 4x4.

I don't think they are the same as it would take more than electronics to make a Nav permanent 4x4 plus the Pathy doesn't suffer the same transmission faults as the Nav.

Gave mine a whirl up on Saddleworth moor yesterday. 2-3 " frozen ice and snow.
Had to get to a customer down a couple of lanes,up an down no problem. Just left it in auto and all good.

Standard Goodyear tyres too.

Nissan really missed a trick not sticking 4x4 auto on the nav, today been running on tarmac, ice and snow. Just stuck the Pathy in Auto 4x4 and no worries about winding up the transmission. happy days!!

Even on an inch of snow the nav winds its transmission up a bit. ***** system. This is the one thing about the l200 where it beats the nav.

What!! L200 better?? Witchcraft, hang him :censored: :happy0071

The mechancal drive system is exactly the same on the pathy and nav bar the back axle, the auto setting is just that it switches between 2 and 4wd, you still have to worry about wind up as if the system goes into 4WD then winds up it will stick in 4WD much like the nav and you would have to be aware that it hasnt shifted back,

I belive the auto setting uses the same electrics as the ESP that the navara doesnt have hence no auto on the nav
There is nothing wrong wtih the navara 4x4 system if used correctly and not just stuck in 4x4 for the sake of it, if it winds up then its not needed, perminent 4x4 is a waste of time as if one wheel slips you still loose drive, how many land rovers and free landers do you see with one wheel wizzing away then the diff lock going in with such a snatch that all 4 wheels then start spinning

If that is the case regarding 4x4 auto, what is the point of it? if you have still wind it up? The 4wd drops out, then the potential difference between front and back axle is not an issue surely, or am I missing something.
I have been running many Jap 4x4's and I'm fully aware of transmission wind up. I'm gonna look up the owners manual on this.

I think the Nav system is great if you know what you are doing. I've had perm 4X4 systems before with the issues mentioned earlier. Although not in the same league as the Pathy, I've had an Audi TT with it's strange Haldex system that whilst it worked, gave you no idea what is was doing and when it was doing it.

The Nav system is fantasic. Yes you get wind up but it's very easy to feel before it causes a problem. A quick switch sorts it out quickly with no fuss. I think it's a case of it works fine if you know what you are doing. And it gives full control when you want. Stuff all the electronic controls. I'm very hapy to switch when it's need. I don't think Nissan missed any tricks. It's perfect for the job and fits the image of the truck perfectly (it means bussines). :)
