Hi, I own a 2005 d40 navara. Recently at low speeds when stopping it feels like the rear brakes are grabbing, this can be extremely bad when pulling away in the morning. I have checked the handbrake cables and they are free, the brake shoes and mechanis ms are also free. I recently cleaned the rear shoes and chamfered them ( no oil leaks from the brake cylinders or the half shaft seals ) , this stopped the problem for about three weeks. It doesn't affect the braking at normal road and motorway speeds, I have been told that it may be linked to the load sensor / adjuster that is fitted to the rear axle. Does anyone have an idea what this is as its extremely annoying in traffic. Thanks for your help on this matter

Regards

It may be worth pulling out the half shafts to check their condition, I believe there have been issues with failing half shafts on the D40 of your vintage.

Do a bit of browsing on the forum and use the search function, the answer will be here.

Let us know how you get on, and while you're at it visit the 'Introduce yourself' section.

Good luck

have a look under the back on the o/s of the axle theres whats know as a load sensing valve make sure the arm is free on it its the part with the spring attached make sure its nice and free where it swivels , make sure the cylinder pistons are all free , try disconecting the cable and see if its ok with them disconnected cables can be know for sticking and it not being obviouse , make sure you havent over adjusted them when you checked them

Never discovered if there was a link to it or not, but I had exactly the same problem about the time my half shafts played up. Ended up putting in a 2009 back axle, so as I say, never found out if the grabbing was linked to the halfshaft problem.

Oil contamination or excessive brake dust can cause this.
With leaking halfshafts Kasey, I'd say this was indeed the cause.

Sounds like halfshaft symptoms but in my experiance when they go they go and you will see noticable amounts of oil in the durms, mine went everywhere when i took the drums off, so if you say there is no oil then its probably not the half shafts

Hi There

I'm only new, but my 08 Nav does the a similar thing... what I discovered was my leaf springs has gone down abit (lazy if you know what I mean), So the load compensation valve on mine is adjusting braking for a load on the back when theres not.

Did you buy the truck from the trade or privately?
