Hi chaps

I've had a good read through lots of posts concerning the D40 common rattle but I'm still unsure as to why mine is making such a racket and sounding like a bag of spanners

Car has done 40k, 2008 Long way down edition.

Sounds fine on start up, its just when driving it rattles under light aceleration and constant throttle, the rattle goes as soon as the throttle is pressed a reasonable amount. then, the rattle can be heard when coming off the throttle to change gear. It's like it does it when the engine is only under light load and not wide open throttle or when the turbo is boosting.

I've read the injector issues, have done the ECU reset, cleaned the boost solenoid and its still there and seems to be getting worse as far as I can tell.

Car otherwise drives fine, doesn't seem to lacking power, or smokling etc.

Its totally standard apart from a EGR blanking plate.

If it is injectors, people seem to just accept it, does anyone know the technical reasoning for the injectors becoming noisy? Are are my specific symtons sound like its injectors?

I've spoken to the local main dealer and they seem to think the timing chain issues doesn't affect my car batch?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as it's now strarting to my nut in!

Hey blacky, I have the same thing - exactly as you described. Thought it was just he way the engine was but I'd be pleased to hear of a fix. It did recently clear up after I had the battery off for a few hours installing a new radio. Unfortunately not been back in it since to check again.

Sounds like a reset temperarly solved yours. Maybe I should try the full reset on mine and see if that works.

It's properly p1ssing me off now. It used to sound so smooth when I first had it.

Injector rattle for sure.

Does anyone know what the actual cause is?

Reading up they are a Denso injector, so I assume that they are used in other vehicles?
Is it an injector design fault, or why does the Navara make them rattle?

My worry is the fuelling is being affected when they are rattling.

mine is exactly the same and didn't improve after a reset either.

I think it is just how they get when they age.

Mine has done nearly 60k more than yours and i noticed the noise when driving round an empty carpark with the window down.
I may try the reset again. I did it when the engine was cold. Maybe i should do it at operating temp?

Mines Is a rattley bugger too, Iv'e changed the timing chain, done the reset, used injector cleaner and still the same.

try using decent diesel. like shell.. it helps

hmm thats alot. its only ÂŁ1.44 /l where i am (they only sell one type called diesel), sainsbury @ ÂŁ1.43. sainsbury in telford 1.39 so i find it worth the money

I've had some 2stroke in mine, seemed to quiet it a tiny bit, but then again- I only run on shell fuel anyway, which has the additives that cheap **** supermarket fuels don't have.
Not noticed any difference on power or the alleged mpg gain though.

Have used 2 stroke for years in diesels.

I have read that it will not affect the Dpf and in fact may make it regen at lower temps but I have not taken the plunge as yet.

Only got a very slight improvement in fuel economy in my old Mondeo but I think it has benefits in turbo diesels in keeping the top end clean and providing a little bit of extra protection to the injectors and pump.

Some will argue that it will damage your engine.

Some will try it and then stop as they aren't getting an extra 20mpg.

The truth as I see it is Mercedes have used it on newish vehicles on a high mileage expedition but kept it quiet.

Make of that what you will.

I had to laugh reading about the subject on Pathfinder Club of Australia.

Def injectors, gotta be. I always TRY to use shell, for the sake of a few pence & the beter the truck runs its actually cheaper in the long run, we pay ÂŁ159.9 up here for high octane petrol & ÂŁ149.9 for premium gold, it works out cheaper in the long run :thumbright:

Well mine ran fine for 3 months fault free, tried a small quantity of mineral two stroke as researched on a full tank, immediately got a slight "miss" when free revving then got a leak on the pressure sensor on the common rail.
I know it's coincidence, but I'm staying well clear of two stroke oil.
I used to run my older deisels on a bit of mineral two stroke no problem.

I am now running on Esso fuel, no probs at all.

Think I may put a tank of the fancy shell stuff in to try, if not then I'll get the injectors flow tested and cleaned and hopefully that will sort it. Can't drive it as it is as its doing my head in.

Cheers for the advice

Mine does the same, or did.

I found 200-250ml of Millers Eco Max per full tank quietened mine down no end and made it smoother.

It does add about ÂŁ5 cost per full tank, but its worth it and I get a bit extra mpg per gallon anyway :)

Two stroke can help in some diesels with injector rattle, but it didnt do anything for mine
