Hello.
Anyone out there got snorkel?
looking at getting one for my 2007 pathfinder, morr coz i like the look of
them rather than wading...
The only concern i have is when hitting big puddles of standing water( at 30 odd mph ISH) the spray does come up over windscreen from LHS,
Anyone with a snorkel out there, whats your comments????
I wouldnt want to be taking in water.
Cheers

I think you can turn the top, open part away from the direction of travel.

Not sure if that is the way they are meant to sit but I assume the manufacturers of a decent snorkel would have considered water ingress.

There is likely to be more of an issue when it is raining rather than going through standing water.

If you don't get an answer here you could perhaps try Pathfinder Club of Australia Forum as lots of the members there have snorkels fitted, over there Pathfinders are used for more rugged pursuits than they tend to be in the UK.

Unlike was some may think the Pathy is actually rather good off road, in particular on sand.

The snorkels do have a system fitted to allow the water to be removed, however don't know how effective it would be against the amount of spray that comes when you hit a puddle with some pace,

Also the head of the snorkels shouldn't be rotated when travelling at speeds as the air movement around them can cause a vacuum, therefore reducing air into the engine

There you go somebody that knows more than me, though I did watch a program about off roading in SA in Sky a few years ago and they mentioned some kind of sock to out on the top to keep out dust which might help reduce water ingress.

They also had different "lids" some of which were round with a top on and had an additional filter in them.

Where did you find out about the vacuum effect?

As the engine sucks in air rather than it being blown in I would not have though it would have made much of a difference?

Though I think there will be more weather to deal with when driving in torrential rain than going through standing water, the area the water has to travel into is relatively small so the amount of water it can take in is also limited?

A very good reason though to stick with a properly engineered snorkel rather than some Chinese designed and built tat that is little more than a plastic funnel!

I know they are all likely made in china but I feel their is a huge difference between stuff that is made in china to proper standards and stuff the Chinese make to sell to the unscrupulous to make a killing at the boot fairs!

I can't remember where I read it, there's a few reasons iirc to run it facing forward as the manufactures make them mainly because the ram effect helps remove the water particles, there's alot of opinions and reasons behind running with the snorkel head forwards or backwards

IMHO I would run it as its intended to, with the head forward.

i have recently fitted a snorkel to my R51 pathfinder

as most on here have already said the snorkel head can be rotated around to face rearwards if u worried about the water splashing in but i havent had a problem with it

if u think of all the pipe work it runns to the bottom of the air box which also has a moisture catch and release hole feature in the bottom

the only time i cover mine with a bag is when i use the hose pipe or jet wash to clean the truck

As above, I really wouldn't worry about water ingress from puddles and rain. Highly unlikely that you will get water in your engine. If you wanted to flip it round, go for it, I wouldn't have thought the vacuum idea would present much of a problem unless you were going silly speeds.
