Hi
I've owned my 2008 Navara for a couple of years with no problems then one day I noticed a humming noise coming from the front left wheel area and the noise has got progressively worse over time, but not only that but them my 4WD light come up and the display on the dash started flashing 4WD engaged when it wasn't. I've had the front wheel checked by a mechanic and he couldn't feel any play with the wheel so he said it may not be a wheel bearing but possible the transfer box at the front. Has anyone got any ideas please??

Thank You

The wheel bearing is a sealed unit in the hub, the bearing is known to hum prior to failure which can happen suddenly.

Your symptoms with the Abs and 4wd issues point directly to the hub bearing failing. Get the hub changed quickly before it fails.

:+1 My first hub that went did the same as yours, no play either, abs and 4WD lights on. I would also recommend changing it as soon as possible as when they really go it can make the truck undrivable.
I have a genuine one in the cupboard if you are anywhere near Edinburgh, I would even give you a hand to change it if you want.

:+1 any slight kick or play in the bearing will alter the air gap on the abs sensor, that will put the abs light on as a fault.
The humming you describe points to the wheel bearing also.

Hi
I have just replaced my front passenger side wheel bearing hub and yet my 4WD light is still on and I'm not to sure whether it has cured the humming noise coming from the front??
Check the front prop shaft UJ's, you can even remove the propshaft altogether and drive the truck to see if the noise and light stops before changing the actual UJ.
Everyone here rubbishes me when I say this but it has been true for me and two others I know, 4WD light shows a UJ on one of the prop shafts is on way out, ABS light shows front wheel bearing on way out.

Sorry about that lookskyward,

but I was asking it becus he wanted to sell me the pick-up, so I thought I could budge in on this post. :slaphead

anywho, I already asked this info else where, but seems hard to find which post it was.

here's the info: if I can still budge in on this post: :fingersx

it's an D40 2006 build manual euro3 68K miles and he'd just replaced both front hubs, but the 4WD does not engage HI /LO. just 4WD flashing. he hasn't come down to replacing the 3 gearbox switches yet.
so it's a process into cross checking what has to be done.

Ohh.. and gears 1 to 3 revs past 4500rpm but when shifting to 4 th and 5th gear the revs stop till 3500rpm. haven't tried 6th gear though, becus of ABS light staying on and brakes not functioning properly. could get in a car wreck :nailbiting
tried holding the shiftpoke to the left or right when in 3th or 4th gear, but nothing.

and going to change the primary chain to a duplex.

soo, I need help before buying :wavey

So to recap,

1. The ABS light is on and the ABS is not working.
2. The truck will not engage 4 hi/4lo and the 4wd light is flashing.
3. The engine is not responsive in 4, 5 and possibly 6th gear.

This could work out expensive, or if you are going to fix it all you could get a hefty discount.

I think that items 1 + 2 are possibly related. you need to get the truck on to a ABS diagnostic machine to identify which sensor(s) is faulty? With a little bit of luck once the ABS fault is cleared the 4wd will work again.

Have you checked the rear brakes/bearings? With the Euro3 D40 there is an known issue with the halfshafts being soft causing the seal to leak oil from the axle into the brake drums. Any play on the rear bearings may cause an ABS fault.

While you are at the back find the connectors for the ABS sensors and make sure they are clean and not broken/damaged.

As for item 3, that is a classic symptom of the Neutral position sensor (NPS) being faulty/worn. It may be possible to remove it and to trim some material off the seat so it goes a wee bit further into the box.

Good luck

Hi,

went on a diagnostic machine and found out Front left abs sensor not functioning. (busy with that right now). so if they get it to work properly, then I hope the 4WD system engages again & that the abs light goes out. Fingers crossed.

they (mechanics "not nissan's") haven't done anything to the rear brake/bearings.
I know about the halfshafts, but did not see any oil dripping or leaking from the drums.
do I have to check it? or go with it till it starts leaking? (no abs fault on the rear)

does the NPS from a D22 fit the D40 gearbox? I do have a spare D22 NPS.
if it doesn't I'm gonna take it out myself and shim a little off, like you advised.

let you know tomorrow.

Cheers

update

all 4 abs wheel sensors have been measured, and believed to be good.
the mechanic found the fault at the ABS "block" ( I think it's located right next to the filter.
they are going to replace it with a 2nh hand one.
hope it solves the problem.

let you know
