Heard this today from a mate 'in the trade', who got it straight from a VOSA inspector.
From January pick up trucks like Navaras, are to be re-classified from class 4 to class 7 for MOT testing purposes.
Stations able to perform class 7 tests are pretty scarce in my neck of the woods, and of course they will cost quite a lot more!
It gets worse though.
If your truck is registered through a business it will have to have a tacho fitted, this will be checked via Swansea when the truck is booked onto the test system, mega bucks to fit these!
Can anyone else confirm this as fact, I have googled it there is plenty from unofficial sources but I have not been able to confirm this on an official site.

Surely it will only apply to "newer" vehicles.
Death of the 4x4 pickup if this applies to all.
Another example of rip off britain.

Nope, I am told all will be re-classified.
This has happened before, I used to run a Merc 307D 3,500GVW truck, it used to be on a class 4, this was then changed to a class 7, I only found out when I took it to my usual garage for a test and they told me they could no longer test it, my nearest station was 15 miles away.
A tacho IS a legal requirement NOW, if a business vehicle is towing a trailer I think to a maximum all up weight of 3,500kg (I may well be wrong on the weight issue), the info I found out today is that ALL business pickups will require a tacho even if they don't tow.

Theres also talk from the good old European Union that they want testing only stations.
They want to seperate testing stations from repairing garages, similar to the VOSA LGV plate testing stations.

But they've just **** all the VOSA testing stations and moved them to local workshops...

So you pay a fee to VOSA (includes the pit fee, test fee etc) and then a pit fee to the hosting garage. So you pay 2 pit fees. How does that work?!?!

Well if that happens when this one goes it's back to Mitsubishi for me, Shogun that is, They priced themselves out of the market when I bought the Nissan ! 40k for a new Shogun Diamond against 20 odd for the Nissan !!! It seemed a reasonable alternative BUT they just cut Shogun's back to 37 for a top specced one ! Rear dvd's etc in other words the same as a V6 list's at with the VAT paid before the squealing an dealing and you end up with a real price 30k ish for a V6,A long Shogun is worth 2 or 3 k more in my book. Although I love pick ups,I don't need one for business anymore, Although I still want a 4wd. PLG for me.

As a one time manager of an MOT station, the idea of reclassifying pick ups to Class 7 has been around for a few years.

As has been said, the difference in cost is less than a fiver for the test itself.

If the fitting of a tacho will create a problem to you, sell yourself the vehicle so it is off the books and a private car. Then pay yourself mileage to use it for business.

I would back this all the way home and am trying to along with the NTTA. All brand new trailers now have to receive IVA approval before being manufactured.

Some of the **** that customers of mine have and use is unreal. Not as bad as some of the **** out there though!

I'm in Leeds Vosa station next month, I'll get all the info and update you all then.
Seems strange, I get monthly updates of changes to laws inc construction and use regs, not heard or read anything about this before.

The quicker we get out of Europe the better, how much more do we have to take with all this BS?

Both of my brothers are MOT testers, i will ask them if they've heard anything, but past experience shows they are the last to know like the rest of us.

Originally pick ups were class 4, then changed up to class 7, there was so much confusion going on, that the testing stations didn't even know what type of test was supposed to be carried out? There are quite a few threads on here regarding this.

I got so ****** off with all the fussing and aggro that i just had mine done (D40) at a class 7 station since, and i guess i will continue to do so, but i still think it's taking liberties and for people like Chris and many others a real inconvenience.

This country really does need to regain control over itself, although i think it's far too late now :(

I will be real interested to know the facts, as I said this info came from a VOSA man doing a spot check on a tester.

:D :D it should be done on weight it just an excuse for more money as for trailers caravans ect that mite be a good idea if they think it through properly I am fed up on paying out and not getting any think back from the guvement Rant over :D :D

Trailers being tested I don't think is a bad idea,How many times have you seen a piece of junk that shouldn't be on the road and thought this is dangerous ??? We don't need to do registration like in the states where each trailer has it's own number/licence plate. All that's needed there is a disc like an artic trailer. Now has anybody thought about the tacho, With a digi card etc you are required not to drive more than 90 hours per 2 week period and have a mandatory rest period. This means that Can't drive it 7 days a week without show a break on your digi card. My understanding is that Tacho's were only required when the vehicle exceeded 3.5 tonnes. In our case we can't do this as our max train weight (truck and trailer combined weight) is lower than 3.5 and therefore not inscope for tacho legislation

You're wrong, they are already a requirement for business pickups that tow.
All this stems from that idiot in Selby who drove his Landrover and trailer onto the railway causing deaths.

Ok wrong again, Basically I don't tow as part of a business just a hobby. Also when I passed my CPC it was back in the dark ages. I don't really keep up changes to light vehicle laws as they don't really affect me. I only use my Navara as personnel transport now.It has never been owned by the business I just took an allowance for mileage.
