Looking around to improve the performance and mpg on my navara a couple of people have suggested these tuning boxes (plug and play things) but when I look into them people say they are only fooling the ecu to doing something that it's not to do, where as a remap actually reprograms the ecu to do it properly, just looking for people's opinion really got the chance to get it remapped this Thursday but also seen a couple of these tuning boxes for sale! So please HELP!!!!

There are a few of us on here with the DTE box and the overall opinion is they work and work well. I had a problem with mine and received great aftersales service from Andy ( Abyss).

While you are pondering your choice, visit the 'Introduce yourself' section and tell us more about you and your Navara, you'll get a warm welcome and more folk will join in with you. :thumbright:

I don't know anything about remaps other than I've driven a couple of dodgy ones which have put me off having a remap myself, but I can tell you I'm more than happy with the DTE PDI box I fitted on Wednesday. I'm only on the default settings as it comes out of the box and already lighting up the rear wheels at the lights 8) Its good enough for me and I like the fact its easily removed and I can fiddle with it myself :)

If you get one make sure it's a good one from Andy, there are good but I decided to,go down the remap route and better for me. However they do work well......

Neill, just out of interest, what does a remap do performance wise that a tuning box doesn't? Thats a genuine question from someone with no experience or knowledge of what a remap involves. I'm not out to cause a debate; just to further my knowledge  :)

As the others say. The DTE Pdi box is brilliant if your just after a quick oooomph improvement.
Although in theory they should save you fuel, you'll get so used to the massive power improvement you'll just floor it everywhere and forget about the mpg
The Pdi type extends the injector spray time by milliseconds but at the correct time, nothing fooled, just improved. The other types available fool your ecu, they instantly improve mpg then it falls back off again, smoked like hell from time to time and have often created a wimp home mode situation.
My old ÂŁ150 Ebay special has made a lovely paperweight in the office.

I got a steinbaeur box the other day the one that connects to each injector and the accelerator pedal seems a lot smoother through the gears and picks up better just no change in the mpg still only getting around 25mpg

There are pros and cons for remaps and tuning boxes....

basically though a quality tuning box such as a dte connects to the injectors (on the nav) and adjust injector timings to burn more efficiently resulting in more power and increased economy as you need less throttle to reach the same speed.

A decent remap should outperform a tuning box as the remap has the ability to monitor and adjust more than just injectors ie air fuel ratio, boost pressure, exhaust gas temp...

its an ecu out job though to remap a nav..... :nailbiting

Yes a tailored remap is probably superior to a chip but, you can't take the remap off to keep if you sell the vehicle.
That'll be one of the tuning box pro's (and remap con's)
