Just over a week ago I received the PDI system from DTE Systems for a trial on my 58 reg Nissan Navara Aventura Automatic. This trial was provided by the UK Importer, Distributor and I think also development partner of the German based DTE System. Andrew, known as Abyss on this forum, owns/runs the company http://www.dte-diesel-tuning.com.
I was especially interested in this as I've always been wondering whether there is a real differentiator between the various tuning boxes that one can buy. This thread is not intended as a name/shame/praise/[fill-in-what-you-want], merely as an account of my experience during a 21 day free trial after which I get the choice to buy or not....
As a reference, I've been running my truck stock for the first 2k miles, then I bought a ÂŁ75 box of eBay. My experiences with that box were initially great, based upon feel and OBC readings for fuel consumption. Then after about 2 weeks I got constant safe mode situations under hard acceleration which I have reported in the do they work or not thread. I had to dial it down to such a level that I just did not notice any power difference anymore. Then at 3426 miles I installed the PDI system of which since 27/2/2009 I have driven now nearly 600 miles...
Impressions, the box and cabling come well packaged with a good manual, car specific installation instructions and I have to be honest oozes quality. It follows the 'jumper' model to change the settings which is easily done. However it has to be noted that you need to have a T10 screwdriver as without it you won't be able to open the box! Luckily I had one. The approach the PDI system takes is different compared to many manufacturers as the system does not connect to the commonrail. Indeed it connects directly to the injectors. As such it was a little daunting to install, but it has to be said the installation was actually really easy. Only slightly fiddly getting to injectors 2 and 3 underneath the bracket, but no more fiddly than reaching that commonrail plug on the end of the rest next to a hot engine block
The pictures below show the product and my installation. Oh another point worth noting is that the product can be removed whilst leaving the loom in place. This was great for me to test the system and in case a software update is required.
The contents of the package
The jumper settings
Installed on the engine injectors
The box tied up and covered in the bag
Next instalment will be about my comparison testing against the standard car on my local test track. Which no doubt is of much more interest to all.
