If hes going to bash away at the cat internals whilst still fitted hes gonna push debris up into the turbo vanes or bash something delicate, with truck on ramp long extension itll be off in ten mins, there used to exhausts so i cant understand his reasoning

I reckon he dont wanna build these flanges, the guys that did mine just cut them with plasma cutter then welded them to the pipe
:+1
Agreed jace about the damage it'll cause gutting it whilst in position
On a ramp it'll be pi$$ easy to remove.....reckon he just don't want to risk snapping a bolt and then making up the two flanges and short pipe when instead he could be making some easy money

What were the stainless exhaust systems on eBay for the d22`s like?
Brilliant.
Top quality and a very good fit, I think they ALL come out of the same far eastern factory, I put one on well over two years ago.
Only negatives, I had to shorten the centre section by about 80mm to match up with the hangers, and due to the extra large diameter pipe it used to knock ocassionally on the gearbox cross member when the engine was shut off, but I cured this when I had to change the clutch.
Re: 'de-gutting cats'
As anyone who knows me would expect, I looked into this for a long time and did a lot of research into it, from what I found out the mpg gains are very marginal.
The only benefit I found was that on fast pick up, small and multi cylinder diesel engines like the VW and BMW the turbo can spool up a little faster due to less exhaust gas resistence.
The only reason I would have de-gutted was for mpg gains, from what my research revealed, I decided against it.

thats the thing the cat on a d22 is right in the engine bay and a **** to get to
It's an efficiency thing, the closer to the exhaust manifold they are, the hotter the run and the more efficient the chemical reaction is.

look what I got.
Gonna be munching this out next week. and get it fitted at the same time.
and It never broke the bank.
also, might even make a penny from the gubbings.

I wanted to say my bit but being a dumb blonde im keeping me gob shut!
I just read the whole thing to the owld man & we are both in aggreement with Martin & Woz :thumbright:

I don't think anyone is stupid enough to try and break it out in situ.
that's the point of buying another on the cheap, put it on the bench and it can be blown out with a airline afterwards.
and apart from removing it afterwards, I'm guessing its undetectable to mot testers.

I have to say Paul, I left the cat in situ
A) for MOT piece of mind
B) as it also silences to some extent
C) will also provide some back pressure (not sure on its importance though)
I don't see the point in taking a cat out and putting a small silencer in, to do the same job in terms of noise and back pressure.I love the sound of mine straight thru from cat back, yes it's a bit louder but much meatier, but hardy noticeable at speed ( air filter is noisier than exhaust on mine at speed).
You can listen on this thread
Hope that helps

all your comments boys and girls warrant a good argument for and against
so far it looks like keep the cat,
valid points also due to gutting a cat in situ, also the pitfalls to removing the cat and buggering up bolts / nuts

in an idea situation i would like the cat removed with no damage to bolts / nuts and the cat gutted on a work bench then refitted with 1 box to help with the noise.

but if the guy at pro sport has reservations as to the removal of the cat and causing damage to the bolts / nuts, then leave it alone fit the exhaust but not bother with any boxes

all good plumber always has a rothenburger gas torch, for such applications. :fingersx :fingersx :fingersx :fingersx

One thing about you Mr Fish you are thorough. Your going to think yourself into a corner on this one. Leave the cat on and choose the exhaust tip you like and GIT" R " DONE

this for me paul????
why thank you. :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2:

ok, so I finally had my stainless exhaust fitted 10 days ago, but held off from posting cause I had a little trouble with the place that done it, I gave them 2 chances to inspect the car to make sure they knew what was required, and both times failed to inspect to flange to the turbo. hence, when it came to do the job, they couldn't do the bypass and they gave me every excuse possible to get out of doing it.
although I could of forced them to do the job they quoted, but i decided to take a discount on the job and not let them fit it.
I must admit, the system itself is of very good standard, with tidy welding and well supported. there customer service and choice off bull shiz doesn't win any prizes.
I went for 2 1/2 304 off the cat with one centre silencer and a side exit.
all for ÂŁ310.

just a couple, as it wont stop persisting down

now don't shout at me after all the advise i have been given
i spoke to pro sport in cardiff today to book the truck in for the exhaust and since i went to meet him somebody else has been in with a d22.
wanting a de-cat or cat gut full 2.5" exhaust with no boxes and side outlet, pro sport have done their homework on the cat since our last meeting and my concerns regarding gutting the cat doing the work on the cat in situ and the possible damaged that could be caused have been taken onboard :D
the results are the gutting of the cat is easy to do in situ with no damage to the turbo as it all comes out with ease, so the guy with the d22 had his cat gutted and exhaust done with no boxes and he was happy.
but to be fair to pro sport they tried to talk the guy into having a small box fitted as it was loud and whistling a lot turbo noise but he said no and off he went.

so I'm going for the cat being gutted one small box 2.5" pipe and side twin outlet pipes
so don't shout at me   :eekout

but once again thank you all for the great feedback and info :thumbleft: :thumbleft:

pics will follow :cheers2: :cheers2:
