Hi everyone

I have come across a bit of a grey area
Well maybe just a money maker
I have been trying to get my truck upgraded to carry a bit more weight
It's currently running on the standard weights

We have a 5 th wheel hitch fitted professionally
Firestone ride rite air bags
Koni uprated shocks and springs. Leafs etc
New uprated tyres

I have spoken to calder leisure who own the upgrade rights they are not willing to help
I have spoken to the fifth wheel co and it seems they don't really want to help

I have spoken to sv tech today and they can do anything without approval from one of the above

This all seems like hard work

If anyone can shed some first hand info how to sort this out can you let me know please as I don't want to spend a fortune messing about I just want to stay legal

Cheers

I'd suggest contacting Vosa and hopefully they'll advise you of the mods requires to comply, then it'll want an inspection before being re-plated. The fifth wheel guys have uprated brakes and suspension, I presume working from an already done type approval.
I've updated trucks with simple tyre and wheel changes, but once again, it depends on design weights etc

The two companies mentioned, probably aren't interested as they didn't carry out the work.

My truck was converted and re plated by The Fifth Wheel Co.

I believe they have an arrangement with Nissan and VOSA?

I think apart from say, removing your air suspension and asking Calder or Fifth Wheel to fit air suspension and a re plate, which may cost more than you want to pay, you need to contact VOSA and DVLA for guidance.

It is basically a paper exercise, but as you've discovered, not very straight forward

I drag a 5ver. When I bought mine I had Calder do the uprating of the truck so I obviously got my re-plating through them at that time.
I didn't know that the only way to get the re-plate was through Calder or the 5th Wheel Company, as I know a lot of motorhome owners seem to get their weights uprated by SV Tech just by sending forms saying they have fitted 'air assisted suspension' kits. Perhaps I was wrong and perhaps it means that the vehicle manufacturer has paid for this and the owners' are just paying a 'fee' to have the re-plate certificate issued after SV Tech are happy the work has been done correctly.

In a way I can understand Calder's and 5th Wheel Company's position because I know they spent a lot of thousands each to enable the re-plating for both the Nissan and the Toyota.

Any modification done to increase the vehicle beyond its design weights will require a type approval.
The people doing the mods will fit devices that have been tested with nissan and accepted to be fit by vosa.
Once modified a paper exercise and inspection at a vosa site will result in a new plate with increased capacity

Not sure what all that is supposed to insinuate but to uprate a nissan navara to carry or tow more weight simply requires from what I can gather is air bag suspension. That I fitted in less than half an hour.
I honestly think that both the fifth wheel and calder are shooting themselves in the foot because not being helpful would simply mean buying a big american superior cheaper 5 th wheeler and maybe getting a ford f250 that is more than capable of towing without all this rigmarole

Don't think anybody is insinuating anything, just a bit of guidance?

I can't understand why SV Tech won't help, they used to take care of that sort of thing?

Lol
All I know at the moment is you need to buy a 5th wheeler from one of the above companies to get the nav uprated

If I wanted to get the truck uprated to carry more bricks as an example and took the hitch out of the bed what would I need to do ?

As i say, your best option might be to remove your air suspension, ask either of the two companies for a price for air suspension and a re plate?

Then you're sorted, i still don't understand why SV Tech won't help?

Apparently SVTech don't own the plating rights to plate it and need permission from one of the above companies.

Must be a company in the country who can uprate the nav

I will ring vosa in the morning.

Documentation completed and sent to vosa
Fingers crossed and will keep you posted.
Cheers for all the input
