Whilst I had my motor modified at Billcar, I took a few photos to show what goes on and the state of the abysmal affair that Nissan fit.
Please bare in mind, I use top quality oils, I service every 6000miles.
You'll see how my timing chain has stretched, not any major but there's a definite difference in length between my stock chain and the new Billcar Duplex.
When you buy your cheap eBay duplex kit, do you get a re-manufactured vac pump with a newly designed uprated shaft??
I'll guess the answer is no, so fitting all the duplex kit is good, but your still leaving a weak link'

The timing chain cover showing everything in place is a worn cover, not mine...
But the tensioner & guides were my worn parts. Obviously you can't see the sharpness of the gears, but any engineer will tell you, sharp gear teeth are the first signs of wear.

The Billcar quoted price to me included new anti-freeze, oil & filter, all gaskets, duplex timing chain kit, new aux drive belts & the modified exchange vac pump, labour & vat.
A very top quality outfit, superb workmanship and knowledge that nobody can match.
As I had other mods done I can't really & honestly advise any differences to the vehicle JUST on the duplex mod, apart from the obvious satisfaction that I now have an engine that is capable of what Nissan should have ensured as standard.

So after looking at my 40,000 mile chain with 6,000 mile oil changes... Are you getting worried???
Sorry for the **** pictures, all the post was done via my phone.

Great post Martin, and a real eye opener, and surely will remove doubt about the timing chain tensioner being made of cheese!

After speaking to you the other day, i am now even more convinced this is cause for concern with D40 owners, and i will get mine sorted.

Your's has been done by the legendary billcar which must be of great comfort and reassurance :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

It's not really the tensioner Steve, it's more the chains.
Very similar set up to the d22/23, but an uprated powered engine, with a downgraded chain :screwy
Nissan then advise longer oil changes on the same design engine... It's all kinda going Peter tong now isn't it lol.

All the grindings, shrapnel, dust go into the oil, some caught by the filter, some not... But slowly & surely you'll be running a nice graphite oil in your engine.
Who needs egr's to knack your oil when nissans crappy chain set up does it for you :faint

Another reason why i would never have one without being under manufacturers warranty.

Not a clue what the pictures are trying to show but it sounds like it's something that needs to go on my list of things to get done!

:study: Have a good read on timing chain stretch/snap issues buddy.
Anything over 60,000 is asking for trouble. Some have managed way over 100,000miles, but some haven't managed 60k... :pale:
Nissan kind of extended the warranty on them, but as per usual Nissan.. A bit at their discretion. :dunno

Thanks Biggi - looks like I'm basically on borrowed time then.

Not much point shelling out on bits for the truck if the engine lets go though...

You can allegedly hear it rattling, what sort of Milage is yours on, what year, and what service history?

It's a 2010 D40 on 85k. Serviced roughly around the 18k intervals recommended...

Nope, about to fit a towbar but that's so I can stick a bike carrier on!

I think I'll be giving Billcar a shout next week and putting a couple of upgrades on hold...

Ah ok, i thought it was the tensioners that wear, causing slack chains, which then stretch, slap about, and wear the gearing too?

cheese and chocolate :(

That was my understanding? :dunno

I thought i read Keith mention that you could find pieces of the worn tensioners in the oil? Or is that caused by the slack chain slapping it?

Ring billcar buddy for a full breakdown of the costs.
I spent quite a bit as I had remap:chain mod/intercooler pipes & axle vent mod.
Remember billcar also provide an uprated vac pump that you don't get from other places.
