Hi

I know that the half shaft problem on the D40 is pretty common, but as my mechanical knowledge is incredibly poor, i was wondering if any of you guys could provide any advice.

I had a leak into the rear drum on one side a couple of weeks ago, a freind of mine replaced the seals & bearing on that side and the "wheel locking up" problem stopped for a week or so, but has now returned. I thought i had sprung another leak but both sides are dry and can't see any sign of more leaks.

I guess my question is, does replacing seals/bearings not really fix the problem? And why would it have been fine for a week or so before going back to locking up.

Also is the locking up caused by the brakes or the shaft itself?

Sorry i probably sound pretty dumb, but when it comes to anything mechanical i am.

Thanks in anticipation.

Some people have been lucky and changing the seals has cured the problem long term. Others have found it only a temporary solution. The root cause is a soft half shaft and it is the seal that wears a groove in the shaft rather than the seal failing.

I swapped my faulty axle for a complete axle from a 2009 truck (that doesn't have the problem) as it was the best solution for both a cure and financially (at that time). This was a while ago and things may have changed, i.e. prices for 2nd hand axles may have gone up.
