For a few days the truck has been making this funny clacking noise intermittently....thought it sounded like its coming from the gearbox or diff. Then yesterday on way home, I pulled over to let a car past and the truck wouldn't get going again! Was just making a zzzzzzzzzzz noise from gearbox like something was spinning but not connecting. I could stick it in 6th with handbrake on and let clutch out and it wouldnt stall or anything....just zzzzzzzzz!! Anyway I had a 20 minute walk to get a phone signal (we havent got 3G everywhere let alone bloody 4G) to ring green flag and when I got back I sat there fiddling with selector switch....clutch down clutch up...engine stopped then running...basically just trying anything I could. Eventually I got it (whatever "it" is) to engage and I had drive again.

Can anyone shed any light on what this might be? Loathe going to stealer as they seem to just throw a mass of parts at it and hope one will fix the problem...at my expense!

It's a manual and a 2009 and I've done some miles in her - 160k!

Ideas...

It is most likely going to be a gearbox off job anyway. If you are not able to do it get the truck to a reliable garage (not the dealer).

At best it is a dodgy clutch, worst case is a gearbox.

Did you try it in 4wd?

In the old days of transfer boxes controlled by a lever is was not unknown to find it in neutral with the zzzzzzzz's going on. It might be a simple as working the tbox switch on a regular basis to make sure that the linkages are not seizing up.

If changing the seletor switch made the diffrence then my guess would be that it was between high and low ratio, could just be a fault with the limits or somthing in the transfer box, allot easier to sort the the main gear box.
is it driving on now or still making noises?
