Morning guys
Ive recently noticed a slightly unsettling noise from the turbo of my euro4 d40.
When I give it a bootfull and it gets up to high revs its fine. It is when I lift off the loud pedal I can hear a faint woooo noise from the turbo ( I think )
It only lasts a second at the most but its the fact that I have been driving it I year and only just noticed it thats got me thinking that something is stopped/started doing something it was / wasent doing before
Anyone got any suggestions/good guesses?

Hi there, don't worry too much - you're not alone.

My 2008 d40 started making a very strange noise at 30k in 2010. now 4 years later, and 70k, still there, but no harm done (apparently)

Nissan replaced the turbo in 2010 (after a lot of moaning) albeit reluctantly as it was on the cusp of factory warranty expiry. Noise went away, but returned 2-3 months later (within 1k miles)

Billcar (Sept 2013)replaced the timing chain and blanked the EGR ... noise went away, but returned 1 odd month later (within 1k miles)

Please note: absolutely no gripes to Billcar, they did a great job and the EGR was above & beyond the call of duty, this certainly wasn't in their remit. Just luck whatever they did caused it to stop for a while.

Turbo spooling or the smooth whistling (not the "gush" from boy-racer-type dump valves) is normal, but mine has taken the tone of fingernails scraped down a blackboard mixed with someone blowing a taut blade of grass in their cupped hands ... somewhere between a whine, a rasp and a screech.

Happens when revs die down between gearchanges, or engine braking say slowing down for roundabouts / junctions etc. try it when driving between tall / close buildings where the sound is really bounced back.

Nissan washed their hands of it, and the mystery is still outstanding. Guess I'm stuck with it. Its an "air" noise, not anything mechanical. Turbo impeller blades all fine, maybe its the Cat converter ... don't know if the d40 even has the latter?

Not much help, but please don't panic that your engine is about to explode any minute. Just think of it as athletes foot - irritating, but you still get from A to B fine.

PS someone else here mentioned "Turbo Boost control solonoid valve" ... I wrote it down and next time I chat to my mechanic mate he might investigate, or firmly cross it off the list of "could-be's"!

Just been out and I gave it the beans through the leeds iner ringroad tunnel! it sounds like the normal turbo whistle but backwards, starts high pitched and goes deeper(if that makes sence) when I lift off!
Im not over concerned cos you have to realy listen to hear it
But if its ****** its ****** and theres not much I can do about it ill just plod on till it gives up!
To answer your query the d40 does have a cat converter and the automatic also has a dpf
But mine will shortly have neather :D
I also have the egr blank but I seam to have lost some mpg with it so debating whether to take it off before I have it remaped
