An advisory on my mot was the front offside wheel bearing was showing very slight signs of play, not enough though to cause concern but something to watch. Is it worth just replacing both sides when i get around to do it?. Ta
Don't think this works on the D40, different type of bearing and the D40 is a sealed unit so can't replace the bearing, have to replace the complete hub, unfortunately for me!!!Phoenix said:Ok, i never go against the guru's but i would just nip them up with a toque, (then back a tiny tiny bit) mine have been playing up for 3 years & before its mot, i always check & nip em up, no howling noise & all good to go, but saying that, mines a 22 not a 40. Its your call.
When my first bearing started to make a noise I went through the same thing as you, no play etc etc. when we had it jacked up and turned the wheel very slowly eventually we could feel a little rough spot. I kept driving it for quite a while and it got noisier and noisier and started to get ABS light on, eventually got so bad I had to drive to dealers and buy a hub.Bob Goat said:I'm in exactly the same position as Hamlet! I've had a bearing noise slowly getting more prominent over the last three weeks, but can't find any play. In fact this morning I left the old girl at my local garage and asked them to take a look for me. My dash cam proved that they took it out for a 15 min drive through the country and put her up on the ramps when they got back - but they can find nothing wrong! No charge for at least an hours worth of diagnosis so no complaint there. So, what else sounds like a bearing on it's way out? Perhaps I should make a new post for that...
:+1 Get them both changed for piece of mind :thumbright:sheepy said:When my first bearing started to make a noise I went through the same thing as you, no play etc etc. when we had it jacked up and turned the wheel very slowly eventually we could feel a little rough spot. My second one went from hearing the noise to being undriveable within 15 miles!
So it seems a bit of a lottery as to how much warning you get. Based on that my advice would be if you think it is a wheel bearing and you can't afford to be stranded somewhere then I would change the hub, if you are keeping the truck for a while I would now just change the pair and have the peace of mind! :cheers2:
I think your 0 key is stuck :throw if not then :fingersxdelvey91 said:my passenger side has been whirring for the last 20000 miles ! But its not given in yet
Just jacked it up again, no play and the rumble has all but disappeared and I struggle to hear anything above normal road noise etc.Hamlet said:Although I don't have any play in mine, I have begun to noticed a rumble coming from the front right when cornering to the left at speed, like going over rumble strips.
I'd assume it's the bearing unless anyone has any other suggestions???
And I'm also assuming that it's completely sealed and there's nothing that can be done with this to prolong the inevitable???
Needle and syringe full of oil???....... :really
Worth a try......
