Ok, i never go against the guru's but i would just nip them up with a toque, (then back a tiny tiny bit) mine have been playing up for 3 years & before its mot, i always check & nip em up, no howling noise & all good to go, but saying that, mines a 22 not a 40. Its your call.
Don't think this works on the D40, different type of bearing and the D40 is a sealed unit so can't replace the bearing, have to replace the complete hub, unfortunately for me!!!

One of the reasons I miss my D22...... :(

That being said, the front right of my D40 has been grumbling at me when cornering to the left for a while now, I know people have said to me once you hear it it will go very quickly after that but I've at least 1000 miles up since I heard it and I check it pretty much every day and still can't find any play.
Of course I'm off on a trip across the country this weekend in the truck so if it's going to bite me in the ass I'm sure it will be over the weekend.......... :nailbiting

I'm in exactly the same position as Hamlet! I've had a bearing noise slowly getting more prominent over the last three weeks, but can't find any play. In fact this morning I left the old girl at my local garage and asked them to take a look for me. My dash cam proved that they took it out for a 15 min drive through the country and put her up on the ramps when they got back - but they can find nothing wrong! No charge for at least an hours worth of diagnosis so no complaint there. So, what else sounds like a bearing on it's way out? Perhaps I should make a new post for that...

Would you consider changing anyways? Is it the original?

When my first bearing started to make a noise I went through the same thing as you, no play etc etc. when we had it jacked up and turned the wheel very slowly eventually we could feel a little rough spot. I kept driving it for quite a while and it got noisier and noisier and started to get ABS light on, eventually got so bad I had to drive to dealers and buy a hub.
My second one went from hearing the noise to being undriveable within 15 miles!
So it seems a bit of a lottery as to how much warning you get. Based on that my advice would be if you think it is a wheel bearing and you can't afford to be stranded somewhere then I would change the hub, if you are keeping the truck for a while I would now just change the pair and have the peace of mind! :cheers2:

my passenger side has been whirring for the last 20000 miles ! But its not given in yet
I think your 0 key is stuck :throw if not then :fingersx

I've done 10000 miles on a ÂŁ40 ebay bearing from a to z spares and had no abs light issues. The swap is relatively straight forward (if you have a rattle gun, I snapped a breaker bar trying to undo the hub nut), so no great issue if it goes. Like others have said, once it starts rumbling, order a new one. Mine managed about 80 miles before becoming undriveable.

Although I don't have any play in mine, I have begun to noticed a rumble coming from the front right when cornering to the left at speed, like going over rumble strips.
I'd assume it's the bearing unless anyone has any other suggestions???

And I'm also assuming that it's completely sealed and there's nothing that can be done with this to prolong the inevitable???

Needle and syringe full of oil???....... :really

Worth a try......
Just jacked it up again, no play and the rumble has all but disappeared and I struggle to hear anything above normal road noise etc.
Spinning the wheel by hand I can't hear anything from the bearing but I might be getting a slight brake bind so might give the caliper a clean and lube and spin the wheel with the pads removed, that might have been the problem all along, the pads and discs are practically new but I'll have a look at the pad surface then I clean the caliper.

I had the same problem the the 5 series for the last few weeks, thought it might be a tyre problem, swopped the front wheels left to right and problem solved!!!

On another note, when I bought the truck it had a vibration in the rear right under braking, also happened when I applied the handbrake. I put it on axle stands, put it in gear and applied the handbrake till it reoccurred, def a vibration in the rear right, pulled the brake drum, clean as a whistle, looks like it just had the shoes replaced and was spotless inside, almost no dust inside, thought it might be one of the shoes not sitting properly, or more likely a warped drum, stuck it back together, continued driving and now that seems to have disappeared too, maybe it was new shoes that just needed to bed in???

Due a DOE shortly (MOT) so I'm sure that will tell more!!!

I've just got back from Billcar where amongst other things I had the front bearings replaced on both sides because my cheapo ebay ones (ÂŁ95 the pair) were dry and grinding themselves to certain oblivion, likely didn't have enough, or any, grease packed into them from production.

Righto. Good to hear. How much did billcar cost

Well, I think I got a deal as I was also having other stuff done, but their standard price is around ÂŁ220 per side, fitted inc. VAT. I bought my ebay ones back in May this year. Cost me ÂŁ95 and ÂŁ130 for local garage to fit as I didn't have the time or patience tbh. They had only done about 4,000 miles when they started to fail. Serves me right for trying to save money on a crucial bit of kit.
