Have you thought about chipping or tuning your Navara V6? Well here is my review.
I had a bit of a disaster with a DTE Tuning box and so rather than risk it I plumped for a remap from Billcar.
My trip from Leicestershire to Shrewsbury was the general mix of roads including motorway (except the bit that was closed on the M54) and I returned 25.9mpg according to the computer on the way there.
Before:
The V6 is a funny old engine. Sure it has piles of torque and it will deliver more than enough power. However you feel as though the engine has had a torrid divorce from the gearbox and their mutual friends the turbo and accelerator are barely on speaking terms. The gearbox seems fed up of the engine always revving and getting shouty while the engine is angry with the gearbox because it has grown fat and lazy and won't shave its legs anymore.
You really have to work the engine to get the bits to finally communicate with each other. So you get a great deal of revs and noise but unless you really press the loud peddle it will simply invite the turbo to do its thing and not expect a great deal of response. The gearbox in the meantime hunts around at low speeds as though it has lost the remote control down the back of the sofa. "I'm sure I had third...oh yeah here it is".
It is all a bit chaotic.
Don't get me wrong the Navara V6 is a terrific machine but you feel as though that if everything just spoke to one another it could be a whole lot better.
This prompted me to visit Billcar the automative version of a marriage guidance councillor.
You're encouraged when you pull up. You see the carpark is full of other Navaras. The word has clearly got out. Dave is blunt "The standard V6 is a bit disappointing isn't it?" he says matter of factly. "It's rather flat" he continues until you reluctantly agree that it is comically bad at 40mph.
Never mind. Dave has a cure.
After
After 4 hours of stern talking to / remapping of the ECU the V6 is transformed. It is clearly smoother the moment you hit the road. As a result the rows between the components have stopped and you get the feeling that they are going out of their way to help each other. "Are you sure you only want that amount of turbo?" it will ask "Oh well if you're offering can I have some more?" "Why yes of course" This conversation is repeated constantly as you press the accelerator. The smoothness of delivery propels you effortlessly through what has now become a ravishingly silky gearbox with legs that go all the way to the top. On song it is like great sex - a wild harmonious symphony. The result is a mass of thrust that propels the truck along the tarmac in a relentless, smooth way.
But then when it wants to be that sweet demure angel it can be. Cruise along at 70 and it will purr along with only the lightest of touches to the accelerator.
Better yet as everything is working together it returns much better fuel economy. On the way back I was getting a eye watering 34.7mpg according to the computer. Now yes I know that it a bit like your mother in law in as much it will never tell you the full truth but even so the results look impressive.
The V6 Billcar remapping makes the Navara the truck it should be. If you do 10,000 miles a year it is also exceptional value for money as the map will pay for itself.
